Title: First pours today
Post by: Paneltruck.lures on 09/16/17 21:48 UTC
Today my son and my self made our first soft plastic pours. Reading on here and watching you tube videos was a huge help. I'm not a fan of the molds I ordered from Hagens. I will be the first to tell you it's the Indian not the arrow but these "arrows" are not user friendly like I thought they would which is why I bought these instead of ones in ones I saw from Do it and Jann's that I liked. I'll order different molds soon but these will work from now.

Nothing to write home about on the day to be expected but of course. By the 4th pours we had started getting something useable. Not pretty but useable, I even dropped some samples off to a coworker tonight who is going fishing for a week in SE Oklahoma starting Monday.

The lighter  green ones with red flake we called Atomic. The darker uglier green with the blue, green and purple flakes we called Bourbon Street. It's dirty and the colors of Mardi Gras so it was a natural choice. I normally ignore safety rules I'm more of a safety third guy but I followed everything I read here and am glad I did. Hot plastisol got spilled on my arm and I could feel it through the denim work shirt I had on it would have been a bad burn. At another point when the plastic was cooloing and I thought it would be okay I pulled my respirator down to get a cool breeze across my face instead I got a whiff of hot plastisol and it's no joke. I put the respirator back on real fast.

We learned a lot and it was fun I'm ready to order more molds and colors and get after it.

Thats awesome to you and your son doing this together.  I can't imagine how good your son will get at bait making starting at such a young age.  And as WW says once you guys start catching fish on your own baits you'll have more plastic baits than you can believe lol.  Congratulations!

That's pretty cool you two are doing this.

I personally would stay away from the plastic molds. Be very careful when using. I little bit of a safety issue here. I would look at the ES molds made by Do-it. If you buy them from Jann's they are 30 bucks. Then you can hold it together with clamps and you won't get the flashing you see on your baits. Plus they are made from aluminum and will hold up much better under heat and will last for ever.

I will give those a look thank you for the suggestion. I'm not happy with what I bought even a novice   so I'll give the aluminum ones try.
Thanks again

The darker (Mardi Gras) color has been a killer in Southeast Iowa this year. Good job. Be safe, and enjoy your new addiction.

I got a text today from my coworker who took the worms to try out and he said he "caught a nice one on Austin's worm". He hasn't responded to my wheres my pictures and which worm but so far we have success.

I'm a touch proud and my wife said the boy is on cloud 9

If you think Austin is on cloud 9 now....wait until he catches a bass on his worm!!

Tech Tip (especially for hand pour molds) : It's not how good you pour....it's how good you can trim with your scissors!!!! (sad...but true for many of us!). Get good fine tip scissors!

Hopefully this coming weekend we can try a few out and catch something. I want to get up Saturday and go fishing then head to the Outdoor Oklahoma expo. I'm off in 2 weeks and after he finishes school each day we can go fish. I was wanting to go to Nebraska and get away and go fishing but it's not in the cards.

That's a great thought on the scissors it makes a lot of sense. I noticed the slower we poured the better the lures came out. Is that a general rule of thumb or dumb luck.

Or

Does it depend on the mold, plastisol heat or something else I can't think of.

That's called practice. And experience.....as gained from practice.

Here it is the first catch of off one my son's worms, untrimmed and all. We were in a hurry to get them to my coworker before he left for his trip so it didn't get finished out.

I will this weekend this week has been nuts at work so I am coming home dead tired. Also it's getting dark early again. I gave the guy who caught the above fish a week off and he is my right hand man so that's a big reason so busy this week. This weekend we will go try them ourselves. We are also going to try more pours tomorrow night.

Awesome can't wait to see how the next batch turns out and a pic of your son with a fish he caught.

We have a small pond behind the car dealership my brother in law works at that has some nice bass and blue gill. Normally everyone but me can catch something out of there so that will be a good spot for him to get one on his own lure. He and I both will be stoked if he catches something.

We poured more tonight we had 3 come out really well. Then it hit my son we forgot salt I don't know how much that's going to hurt.

I will post pictures of the 3 good ones after he trims them out. I'm not a fan of these Hagens Lori Kay molds I know I'm far from an expert on pouring molds but I'm thinking there has to be better molds. They just don't have a great seal  at the top that I think is letting air in and might not be made for a novice.

Uneducated impulse buy :1 Aaron: 0

I think it was mentioned earlier but the ES molds are cheap easy to use and put out some darn nice baits. No trimming required.  You will save a lot of time too.

I have been looking that those ES molds I like what I see. I'd like to see my son save up and buy them himself but I'm getting in to it a little too so I bet I cave soon. Hey Christmas and his birthday are coming.

It's enjoyable to spend time with the kids making the plastics. also the added bonus of letting your imagination run free with the colors and when your done you have a useful object.

Ill enjoy it more when the weather cools off. Long sleeves, gloves and a respirator when it's 92 degrees outside sucks a little of the fun out of it.

Tested out our lures tonight no hits on them but I didn't feel too bad nobody else I saw out there either on boat or from the bank was getting any bites.

It sure was! Wes Watkins reservoir is east of the OKC metro and very well maintained. It's nice to have a short drive getaway. Being in a metropolitan area with almost 1.5 million people gets me down at times. I grew up on the edge of town in a town with less than 20 thousand people. I like this lake it has some great camping spots. My back won't allow for primitively camping anymore but I'd like to buy a good used camping trailer after I buy a new home which is what I'm working towards now.

Tried some senkos and paddle tail senkos out tonigh they worked very well. I am starting to really enjoy making these soft plastics. I do not know why but since I updated my phone photos to this site won’t upload. We did a baby bass green with silver flake. If you have Instagram you can see pictures on our IG page. Paneltrucklures

The boys finished with school early today so we worked on plastics for about 5 hours. We started off with air bubbles, paddles tales with half a paddle. Senkos that were full on bottom and were a tiny string on top. Craws with no claw, half a claw, 1 claw, no legs, pick a combination we had it wrong with craws. Didn’t matter if we poured or injected it came out bad then all of a sudden about 45 minuets before it was time to clean and put away so I could go to a youth hockey meeting we started churning out the best craws and worms we have made to date. It was bittersweet, hopefully tomorrow and Saturday the storms will stay away we can test them out.

Glade that things got better before you had to go to your meeting and hope you get a chance to play with them this weekend. It’s going to rain by me this weekend to but still planing on fishing sometime.

The good thing about working with plastic is you can melt and re-use the rejects! It's a good way to learn and then not waste too much product.

OR.....you could just toss them in a bag and take them fishing. Often times what gets the hit is something that isn't entirely perfect.

If everything works out I am going to fishing in Norman this afternoon. There is a pond behind where my bother in law works. It’s a catch a release pond that is overstocked, honestly they need to let a few be harvested out of the pond. The bass and blue gill are biting hard. My brother in law  caught 57 in about 3 hours after he got off work one evening last week. I went and bought a top water crank bait to match what he caught a majority of those 57 on.  I’m going to throw it out a few times then let the middle boy try it and try out some of our plastics including some the the “irregulars”. I kept a few that didn’t turn out right to fish.  Then some got remelted or are in the scraps bag to be redone.

I had fun with the kids for 5 hours and that’s what matters most hopefully we can get some bites on what we made and make it that much better.
