« on: 03/09/18 06:01 UTC »
How do you guys make chatterbaits? I have a poisontail jig mold and would like to make some. Do you use split rings to put blade on or open the hook and put it on there? Were is the best place to get the blades at? Sorry dont know nothing about making these.

Thanks

Barlow’s for the blades and they do open the eye of the hook. There is a video by that guy skimpy making them out of that mold. Video look on bass jigs skimpy 253 And you’ll find it.

  I'm not real big on opening the eyes of the hooks up. They break pretty easy. I have an arky jig mold and took a Dremel tool and ground where the eye of the hook goes so it would take a cross eye hook. Then I took one of the pins for making the hole for the fiber guard and cut it so when I poured the bait there was no hole. Then I use a split ring and put the bait together like on the Barlows video. I don't know why you couldn't do the same with the poison tail mold. I also have done this with the sparkie jig mold because there I can make 1/2 and 5/8 oz heads. There I can make them with a 4/0 and 5/0 hooks for use when you're tossing a bigger swim bait on it. The heavier weight keeps it from rolling as much.

Some hooks will open and some will just break. On my blade baits / sonar I do cut the treble hook and  re soider haven’t had one fail yet.

Heating the eye to glowing takes the temper out allowing it to be manipulated without breaking (and they open very easily when hot)... I never had even the largest of fish pull one of these apart after this has been done to the hook.

To me....if the eye after opening isn't big enough to allow free movement of the blade, why bother.  Go with a split ring.   I would rather modify a spinnerbait with a heavy wire to form an eye that will accept the blade and close once again. Also, by forming the eye up the wire an inch or so basically makes a different vibration all together.  ;D ;
