Pepperoni Rolls
« on: 03/25/18 10:51 UTC »
Ctom’s recent culinary posts got me thinking about pepperoni rolls and their availability in other states. I am referring to beard dough that is stuffed with either sliced, stick, or ground pepperoni with or without cheese and then baked to a golden brown.
The story I heard growing up was that they originated in Fairmont, WV when the coal miners’ wives started making them as an alternative in the miners’ lunches. These are a staple in every WV grocery and convenient store still today. I have yet to find any traveling to and from the beach in NC.
So, who out there knows what I’m talking about and what state are you in?

What you describe sounds almost like a pastie....a bread/meat meal in one. They're popular in some parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. Probably other areas too.

I think a person could make something like what you've mentioned by rolling out a ball of bread dough and putting some pizza sauce, shredded cheese and chopped pepperoni and/or sausage on half of it then folding the bread circle in half and pinching down the edges and baking. I might have to try this. Sounds good although I can't stand pasties....too many healthy veggies and stuff in them.

There is a local pizza chain that has them. I have never had them but they look good probably not too authentic.

Ctom, you are correct. We usually just make them with the pepperoni and cheese and frozen dough. Sometimes we get fancy with garden-homemade tomato sauce and peppers.
Here are some in the local Walmart

And yes, that is $3.29 per large ronni roll.

I can't even pronounce that name....sounds like a terrorist. I love the town they're made in. Gyspy. I think I know her. Or her relatives.

Guess it’s pretty clear why we (WV) have clinched the top state in obesity and heart disease for several years. But we eat good for a short period of time though.
