National Lampoon's Mille Lacs Vacation
« on: 06/26/18 12:21 UTC »
2011 was the last year I'd taken a trip with my folks so we were pretty excited to plan a short weekend getaway up to Minnesota.  We rented a log cabin at the Red Door Resort and enjoyed cabin life for a couple of days.  We couldn't have asked for a better weekend to be at the lake; both the weather and fishing were phenomenal.

This was mom's first time on big water and one of the few times she'd been walleye fishing with me.  Dad had the hot hand Saturday morning landing a 25.5", 26.75", 27.25", & 28" himself before noon.  We docked up at one of the resorts and had lunch and did some smallmouth fishing in the afternoon.

Sunday morning mom caught this giant 27.5" within 2 minutes of getting to our spot.  Our Sunday morning was short lived as she got sea sick and we were forced to come in.  Giant Arcs were everywhere on bottom and I think I "one more drift"ed her until she nearly puked.  We left the lake on a double, a pair of 25"ers.

The fish have put on a lot of weight in the last two weeks.  They seem to take forever to get in.  We rigged leeches and crawlers to catch most of our fish.  Long snells in the clean water put a few more big fish in the boat.  Leeches were best if you wanted a big bite.

Me too. Mine died in 2012. I'll continue to live my life but the world will never be the same.

You will look back on this trip some day, and remember it as one of the best of times. Priceless.
