Spinnerbait spins when retrieved quickly
« on: 08/22/14 11:41 UTC »
I just bought the Bullet and Banana jig molds and all the wires, hooks etc and I made up a few of the small 1/8 oz bullet spinnerbaits.

If I'm reeling them in fast they spin side-wards. (they are perfect at a slow/medium speed)  Do I:

Need to use a bigger blade

Cut the top leg wire shorter (I'm trying to line it up so that the swivel attaches right at the head of the bait so the blade then is at the back  of the hook.)

Keep the top leg longer.

or... always use a trailer of some sort which acts like a rudder.

Don't reel that little bait so fast!

Or...yes to any and all of the above??

The Banana mold I purchased was the 1/4 and 3/8 and the 3/8oz spinnerbaits I made up used a bigger blade...and bigger skirt....and a trailer and those don't spin side-wards at all even at warp speed.

Adjust the top wire bending it left or right till it runs rights you can pull it by the boat or shore to make sure it's spinning right.  If I remember they call it tuning it.

Make sure the wires are straight, both "legs" in-line with each other and the hook-shank.  And try a smaller blade.

The bottom line is the blade is trying to spin the bait... a smaller blade or more mass (weight or bulk) on the bait portion will cure it.  You could also shorten the spinner arm or squeeze it closer to the bait.

And as BKJ said, make sure your wires are perfectly in line... the bait may pull a little either way depending on rotation, but I wouldn't bend the wire arms to compensate unless you have one-way blades (like the Vibratron or Dakota blades).

efishnc,
Thanks for the tip on getting the Banana spinner bait mold. It runs really nice and straight. Did pretty good with it too! 3 small smallmouth, a 4.5lb largemouth (which looked a LOT bigger after catching those small smallmouth!) a "nice" Northern and a 8.25 lb Northern that really put on a big fight.

You bet, Andy... (there is a lot one can do to make things better or worse with any spinner)... I'm glad you got your baits running true and that you got some quality fish with it because the banana spinner is one mold every hobbyist should have.
