Gary's rig
« on: 09/03/15 11:57 UTC »
A friend and I hit the big river this morning and focused on crappies. I gave Gary's rig he mentioned in another thread in the forum a shot using a solid black Hellgie and got some pretty decent crappies using it. Other baits included the 1'5" Thump-It in a bluegill plastic with a chartreuse tail.

The fishing today was really pretty good to us as we managed to catch maybe 80 crappies and a few sunfish. They were hitting when we got on the water and stayed active until the sun punched thru the fog, then it ended. Fun morning. Got fish and got to try a new technique so its been good on all fronts.

Are you fishing those Thump-it by cast and retrieve? Reason I ask the last couple of weeks we've had crappie hitting all over the lake, chasing minnows, but were catching very few. I'm pouring up some three inch grubs and going to try that. (Something larger) The only people that are catching any are spider rigging, trowing slowly with live minnows.

Today the Thump-Its were fished under a float by casting and doing a pop, stop, pop retrieve and by casting and retrieving medium slow. We fished an area with 33+ feet of water and found pops of suspended crappies at about 5-9 feet down. Anything put down where the fish were got nailed right now.

None other Dude! The rig worked great even though the weight never contacted bottom. We located loose pods of crappies and needed something with some weight to hold a bait at specific depths as we slowly trolled or drifted thru the fish. Worked very well.

Thank You Sir!

The Rig does Swim well, and was part of the thinking (an "ill-rigged" Soft Plastic is stabilized at the Snap).

Enjoy!  Can hardly wait to hear about more successes, Mr. Tom!  Get 'em!
