Flash skirts
« on: 12/11/24 12:41 UTC »
I threw some heat in the shop yesterday and fired up the hot pot to cast some of the new Compact Finesse heads. They turned out nice done in purple, PB&J, Watermelon /red and Alewive powder coats. I did all three sizes and couldn't be happier with the outcome. Very nice mold and very easy casting. Home run Do-It dudes!

Next, I hung some of the new "flash" silicone pre-made shirts on them. And again, I am quite happy.

Seen in the picture from the left top to right is the Dark Matter skirt on a purple head. Top center is the Old School Gill skirt on the PB&J head. Top right is the Natural Shad skirt on the alewive head. Bottom left is the Sunburnt Gill skirt on the watermelon/red, and bottom right the Lavender Shad skirt on the alewive head again.

The weed guards have not been trimmed yet in the picture.

Next up will be the skirts on some spinner baits. We're supposed to see near 0 degrees for the next couple days so the shop will be quiet until some warmth reappears, later in the week and weekend.

I like that flash.  I have been known to steal some Christmas Tinsel.  ;)

Very nice Tom.  I have had to rethink how to pour plastics in the winter.  My old garage was heated so not a problem.  New garage not so much,  So I run my griddle when it is cold.  Molds, injectors blenders ,everything gets a heat treatment.  If I am hand pouring silicone molds I will place an aluminum mold on the griddle and set my silicone on top of it,  Warms up nicely and lets me laminate silicone.
I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.

The cold will change the dynamics of everything. We're at 1 degree right now and were below zero earlier. I always have my hot pot and any molds I want to use on top of our furnace in the house, so the heat-up time is quicker and less stress on the pot's elements.

I keep a gallon of plastic in the utility room too and bring in any plastic molds I plan to inject so they won't sweat when hot plastic hits them.

My shop is really well insulated and when I turn on the space heater it'll get fairly warm and stay warm fro several hours. In severe cold like today I have a propane heater I'll fire up and leave run for an hour and it'll be 75 well within that hour. I shut it down and run the exhaust fan for ten minutes to get the co levels back to normal then turn the fan off and the room will be quite warm for maybe five hours.

Great looking jigs Tom!  I poured & painted some but haven't added any skirts yet. I tie everything, so takes some time.

I also have poured these jigs with a 3/0 Gamakatsu hook, so small & compact. I cut the barbs down too, am not a fan of those big barbs.

In the past, I've added fly tying flash into silicone skirts, but it always gets beat up, so I limit doing it now. I'll tie some jigs & even spinnerbaits now with only flash, which works great when the waters muddy here.

I used a greenpumpkin with blue glitter powder that I had mixed.

Nice heads there Jim. I added the new pre-bound silicone flash tabs to mine just to show off the new colors. Brennan said that the guys on the Mississippi are having a good time with the new flash series tabs on spinners so that's my next target.
