Soft bait mold mod?
« on: 12/02/25 14:23 UTC »
I am assuming there is a way to plug part of a soft bait mold to slightly change it.  I have a swim frog mold that I am trying to get the feet thinner.  Is there something I can put in the other half of the mold to block that part off?  I tried searching old posts, but couldn't find an answer.

I appreciate any ideas.

I use JB weld "Steel Stick" or JB Hi Temp weld. Both will work fine. Do as the directions call for then push the putty into the portion of the mold you want to close off. Then use a single edge razor to plane off any high spots or excess and to sharpen the edge in the cavity where you want to putty to stop. It'll harden in twenty minutes enough to use. It can be picked out of the mold should you want to eliminate it.

I assume you are looking for more action... Could you pour the bait with soft plastic, Cut legs off and put them back in. Pour with your harder plastic at 350*+ to bond legs. Just a thought.

I did the putty job on my Big Foot CNC mold, can't recall if its the 4" or 4.5", but it turned out some nice frogs with some serious leg action.

Thanks guys.  It is the 4.5 frog.  The feet on it are thick.  I haven't tried pouring the feet in softer vs the body, so I'll give that a try first.

I will make some of that and then do the putty trick.  It'll be a while before I can run a test but we will see which one I like more.  I'm looking at it as a temp mod that I can pick back out if I don't like it or prefer the softer feet approach.

I prefer red RTV high temp silicone over jb weld. Clean mold with acetone or similar before you apply.

Thanks.  I appreciate the input and assorted options.

I knew there had to be a simple solution or at least a few things to try.

You might be able to get away with inserting a piece of aluminum foil into the cavity just covering the thick portion.  Clamp and shoot it will give you a split tail.  Then just cut off one of the sections.  Might be worth a try to see if you like it before modding the mold.
I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.

On a similar thought, take some thin tin punch metal and make a splitter plate, much like Sarge has offered only slightly thicker and stiffer than the foil. Shoot a few, salvaging the split feet and legs to use as Sarge describes. The cool thing doing it this way is that the "half" feet/legs on both sides of the splitter will work on your baits.... half the need to shoot a mess of baits.

I think that the soft plastic legs will get you where you want. Especially if you want to have different color legs.  :D

There is something about two color baits that are special.  I would also say three color baits but I'm not that talented or at least not yet
