Short Shank Jig Hooks?
« on: 01/08/19 22:26 UTC »
Anyone know where I can get short shank jig hooks? I make my own jigs using the "Do It Molds- Live Bait Jig, assorted sizes, MODEL: LBS-6-A". I mostly just use the 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" sizes. I am partial to the double eyed jig mold with inserts for a clip on style stinger hook. I have been using Eagle Claw # 571 hooks and they are good for smaller fish but I am looking for a little stronger hook with less flex. I am from Manitoba, Canada and the big Lake Winnipeg greenback Walleye that are caught commonly go 13+ pounds. When fishing, I use a lower drag setting and don't horse in fish but still, the # 571 hook is a fine wire hook that is quite springy and suffers from flexing and bending that I feel contributes to a higher percentage of dropped fish.

On-line, I found some VMC # 7153 and 7154 jig hooks at https://vmcpeche.com/products/aberde...k-jig-90%C2%B0 and https://vmcpeche.com/products/aberde...C2%B0-fireball that look very promising. I would like to buy a small batch of them to experiment with but I am not able to find anyone that sells them. Even if I have to make modifications to the mold to fit a thicker or less springy hook, or even to buy a different mold that will work better, preferrably of the double eyed type for a clip on style stinger hook, I am OK with that.  I have been looking hard for any alternatives but I can't seem to find anything else out there. Anyone know where I can buy any VMC 7153 and 7154 hooks or any other suggestions?

Welcome to the Do-It forums lirwin4.

I have the Live Bait Head mold from Do-It that takes the 571 hooks from Eagle Claw and have never had a hook open up or bend unless I was fishing a super heavy braid and stuck in a major league chunk of wood or a huge rock.

The VMC 7153 hook is going to be pretty much the same as the Eagle Claw 571, while the 7154 is shown as a 2x, somewhat heavier wire and stronger. What you're looking at in the VMC site is their product site used for commercial information. I checked Cap't Hooks but they don't show these hooks so I'm out of help options for you. I'd use the "contact" tool in the menu bar at the site and email the company with your inquiry. There's a "distributor" tool there as well and searching thru those who deal with VMC a little closer to the customer might prove to be more fruitful.
