Kutter is Krazy Kool
« on: 01/30/21 23:46 UTC »
As Tom mentioned, I made a trip to HQ yesterday... the primary reason was to return an errant product shipment, but I also wanted to talk hunting with Kyle, fishing with Brennan, and check in with Mark to see what new designs he's working on... some pretty cool stuff in the works, and hopefully we will see some (more) of it yet this year.

While I was there I was hoping to pick up two molds, the Bubba Scud and the Kutter; given the season, Bubba was out of stock, so I only was able to get the Kutter... and what a "Kool" mold the Kutter is!  Basically, if I was just starting out with plastics (newbs take note), or if I lost everything and was going to replace it, this would be one of the first molds I would get.  It's the perfect size (combination of length and thickness) for a single choice in the worm category... sure some crafters may want to go bigger or smaller, but this guy is going to be a highly versatile bait for stereotypical middle of the road fishing.  Of course, I'll fish it weedless for LMB, and probably on a lead head for walleyes too, but it has so much more potential with some slight modifications.

Even though I have a couple of Senko molds, I'm planning on fishing this one wacky style where I might want a more subtle presentation. I'm also planning to splice the tail of the Kutter to the OG for a new and improved grub to wail on the SMB.  Another spin I'm planning for the tail section (about half the worm) will be for a completely different set of legs on the swim toad.  Golly, I have not been this excited about mold versatility since the Flippin' Gorilla... (I almost shot it today, but ended up changing oil on the truck, hanging storage racks in the garage, and hauling wood into the house before the snow started to fly.)

I have the Kutter mold and pretty much agree with you Dave. I'll use it for walleyes on that lead you mention. Like the new Shiner mold its a large framed mold and I like how they sneaked the tail only sections in on one end...great for creating tail colors without have to make whole baits just to cut of farting around with pins and duplicate injections for an ecore tail.

I'm pretty much exclusively a bass guy but find this style of worm extremely versatile.  During winter time I love to drag it on a heavy shaky head really slow, sometimes give it a sharp hop to get a reaction bite.  Come spring time it is a phenomenal search bait either unweighted or on a 1/8oz belly weighted worm swum through the grass, around laydowns, docks, etc allowing you to stay weedless and still cover water pretty quickly.  I also love to pitch it with a pegged weight to clumps of vegetation, isolated stumps, dock pilings.  You're only limited by your imagination when fishing these baits.

I don't have this mold but these are essentially the same thing I did in watermelon red.  Without question one of my go-to baits in the spring time.

I spent most of the day cutting, hauling, and splitting wood to bolster my supply before the polar vexing hits us next weekend.  With only one and half trunk pieces remaining to be split, I ran out of fuel and ended up finishing the job the old fashion way (with a maul).  As I was closing up the garage, I decided that since I was already dressed for outside work, I would test the new mold (with some old plastic) just to scratch that itch.

Besides making some standard worms in motor oil, I wanted to experiment with the franken-lures I mentioned above.  The frog body is from the 4" Croaker with legs exchanged for 2/3 Kutter worms.  I started making my Kutter tail grubs with the OG, but they were not that impressive; something told me to dig out the Tango Tube and KA-POW, that was the splice I was looking for... I expect the unique size and sound this fella has will generate a few more bites than other baits of similar size.

Awesome way to use parts of molds together To make something different . Thanks efishnc
Nice color combos can be made with the fact that a tail mold is included with that kutter mold’s. Thanks Tom.
May your days be filled with sun shine and you always have a tight line. AMEN

Back in the 80s when rubber frog colors were far more primitive, I replaced the legs on multiple frogs with white Mr. Twisters... I can't say that it really made a difference one way or another, but I just knew that I wanted something different than the other guys in the tournaments I was fishing.

I don't know why I didn't post this when I did the others, but this is the Kutter worm (one with the tail nipped off) in the 4" senko mold.

Here on the Upper Miss, the 4" senko is a smallmouth killer in mid-late summer... if you don't have a 4" senko, the Kutter will easily substitute in this category and provide some serious lip-jacking during the dog days.

Well, the daylight is increasing and the temps are climbing (finally), so it's on the way... and truth be told, I would feel robbed if I didn't have a chance to yank some pre-spawn swampies during the spring warm up.

I have the CNC one of the GY senko mold in the 4 inch also. So I made some with the Kutter mold and compared. They seemed softer and maybe because of the hook slot. I think they would work. In the spring I fish a lot of 4 and 5 inch senkos so I spent the extra money and bought the CNC version from Do-it. By far the best senko mold on the market.

I agree, the 4" senko is a must have mold... it's hard for me to conclusively say that the 4" senko is my top smallmouth producer, but it is definitely in the top three... I've ripped lots of lips with it!

And I also agree these pseudo senkos DO have a softer feel... I presumed was due to the fact that they are a tiny bit slimmer than those from the actual GY mold, but I never considered the hook slot (and now suspect both play into their softness).  Even though it's speculative to say there will be any real difference in bites with this softer feel, an easy cure would be to add a little hardener.

How ever they are made, 4" senko type baits are great fish catchers, and there is no doubt the Kutter mold can produce a suitable substitute for those not wanting to buy the 4" senko CNC mold.
