Trout Rig for marabou streamer
« on: 10/28/17 16:39 UTC »
Went to Ottumwa, Ia. this morning to try trout fishing in the IDNR Urban trout release program.
It was quite windy and cold, but it seems trout love that type of weather. A buddy and I limited out with 5 each in about 2 hours.
Started off a bit slow until we found them hugging the shoreline.
Here is what we were using to catch them on. Same streamer we did well on last weekend in Southern Mo.

Tiemco #3769 hooks size 16.
Olive thread 6/0
Sally Hansen nail polish for head cement, Color #140
Spey marabou feathers.
I'll try to post a picture if I can figure it out.

Those look cool, wonder if the okie trout would find them as attractive as I do?

I think Okie trout may go for them as well. When we were at Roaring River we met some fisherman from Oklahoma and they purchased a couple from me. I never saw them the next day to see how they did using them.

How much do you sell them for? I might be willing to invest in a couple of the next few weeks

Those will def do the job.  Personally, I would go for a longer shanked streamer hook (would help prevent short strikes).
I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.

Is that hook size right, #16 ? and how long are those flies? Look long in the picture. For stocked trout I usually tie up on size 8 to 12 hooks.

#16 Tiemco 3769. The fly is about 2-2½" long when wet. Not many short strikes olsarge. They seem to inhale hook and all with the smaller hooks. Weird, but 90% are hooked in the corner of thier mouth. I have tied on #18 and #20 hooks, but they are way to hard to unhook. I am thinking of using barbless hooks on #18 and #20 to see how it works. My Dad always used #14 hooks.

I was on the Texas Parks and Wildlife website today messing around looking at the  rainbow trout stocking schedule just for kicks thinking everything is going to be too far of a drive for me. Turns out the small city lake in the little town my mom lives in is going to get stocked with 2,000 trout. Once in December and once in February. I’m excited this is a fairly small lake so 2,000 of any species seems a bit high but I like my odds. We will see if these Marabous bring me luck in Texas as well.

Thanks! I’m trying not to get my hopes up but  I should be able to make it out there during that time.
