Soft Spoonery
« on: 02/03/18 16:58 UTC »

Add a wire coil into the wire form, between the free ends of the wire form that will be inside the cavity so the plastic has something to secure to.
Shoot these in plastic for slow-sinking shallow water spoons...

You will have to find a way to connect the wire form together or a fish will pull it out of a soft bait. Wonder if you could pour them with alumilites super plastic. Both soft and hard plastic would be cool and might be a great trout and red bait. Great idea!!!!!

Sort of on this order Gary?

This was done in the casting Spoon Mold with a wire hanger inside. I just wire tied the loops closed than shot in black plastic. The is the 1/2 ounce size. Plastic liked to bleed around the wire loops and needed some trimming. I add the eye then brushed some pearl on this one and gave it a finish dip in clear plastic. It right around 10 degrees in the garage and the black was a remelt as was the clear. I had one heck of a time with bubbles and the cold plastic to melt nice but a person can get the idea here. The microwave didn't like the cold running either.

I think with some tinkering a guy could make some decent soft-baits using this type of mold if he wanted something different. I'm not certain how well a bait would hold up due to the flexing in the wire.

I'm thinking just shoot them around the wire assembly and rock it, Mr. Tom.
In inland saltwater we throw a lot of Gold Spoons and this is my idea for a lighter version of them, and cheaper, and possibly less line twist-causing.
There's enough plastic in those cavities to cast well but it wouldn't sink fast, so it wouldn't have to be retrieved fast in shallow water.

As of now, this is just an idea, I don't have the mold YET, although it WILL be obtained before too too long.

Just tossing it on the table for You Guys to have a look-see.

I'll wrap some .031" or .035" or .041" wire on a rod, I already have some 3/16" brass rod to try, but may need to step down a little, may use the shank of a small screwdriver.  I'll leave a tag end on each side of the coil.  Curl the free ends of the wire form that runs through the lead cavity, curl the tag ends of the coil onto the hooks on the wire form to hold the coil in place, BAM, shoot the bait on the form and the coil.  Solid.  Roll with it.

At most, maybe add eyes, cover-dip the head, clean the plastic off of the forward wire eye, hang to cure.  Done.

Roger on'dat, Mr. Tom.

Yours got all de Bells and Whistles.  Me like to keep tings simple.
I'm thinking more along the lines of a Soft Gold Spoon, for starters probably just a hit of Gold Pearl then expand from there with a few natural imitations of native species afterwards, maybe Shad, Sheepshead Minnows, other deep-bodied critters.

For smal scale production, I`d rather use resin. Once tried that in a flutter jig mold. Ran out through the cracks, terrible mess. Better make a silicone mold.

This type of finnish epoxy spoons is very popular for cold water searun browns, but also northern pike in larger sizes. I`ve also taken zander (Walleye) surface fishing at night on them where I needed casting distance.

With clear resin, you can mold in all sorts of cool stuff like real fish skin, shell veneer and the familiar soft bait colors and pigments. This danish guy has a nice youtube channel on the topic:

I love that bait BKJ! It is exactly what I've been looking for to use this season. Could you possibly shoot an over head picture of it? I think I have to buy those molds used to make it. Love the anchovy color as well. Very cool!

Tanks Bou'Cou, Lines!

The body is slightly wider than the head, it's not a perfect match per the width, and I've requested a half-thickness version because of it, for this rigging.
