another good morning....
« on: 09/29/20 11:59 UTC »
We hit the same Mississippi River backwater as last week this morning and had pretty decent luck. Caught about the same number of fish but only 6 came home and they were dandies. Purple/chartreuse Thump-Its did the trick on purple 1/16 and 3/32 heads.

Lots of slough grass is coming down the river today from rains between the trips. Water was higher by about 6 inches. Did I mention the pain in the butt grass?

The fish shallowed up today, hanging about 3 feet under the surface and seemed to prefer being under the vast mats of duckweed. Fishing a float was not the way to approach these fish today and a heavier than usual head was needed to punch thru the matting. Reeling in a 13" crappie felt more like reeling in a nine pound carp with all the grass and duck weed mat coming in with it. BUT....we caught fish. The party stopped right at 10 am though.

We really put the hammer down on really nice [8 1/2" to 9"] sunfish and some real consistent 10 1/2" crappies very early today. Mississippi backwaters again. 30 degrees when we got there but fishing was good enough to make us forget about the chill. Beautiful full harvest moon too. We had basically a fish every cast until 8:30, then the tight lip switch got thrown. Weird the way they just right now shut down. BUT, I have dinner all filleted out and soaking for a bit.

Glad you got out again and was able to get a meal. Felt good enough the other day to make 25 casts but got nothing but leaves but was great to have the rod in my hand for the first time in a long time.

Good for you. Getting out and fishing is a balm and one should use it as often as he can.

Yesterday we hit the backwaters again and did real well on 12"-13" crappies....some real brutes. Sunfish must be moving back into the backwaters of main channel wingdams because I have never seen so many 8"-9" sunnies. We split ten crappies between us and let the sunfish go. Great morning but the window slammed closed at 9 AM. This morning I was back on the docks and caught plenty of fish but the size is still lacking and the huge schools of pin minnows have not come into the marinas yet so its still early for productive fishing on the docks.

Color has been a big issue. Yesterday the change from purple/chartreuse tail to junebug/chartreuse tail was huge. Its just nuts how two colors can be close to each other yet the fish can keep them so far apart.

Glad they played nice for ya. Hopefully they’ll be few more days like that before we’re stuck in the snow and ice.

Hopefully we moved far enough south that we won't have to endure the snow and ice this year. Wishing all of you northerners a good mild winter this year.

The way this year has been, I wouldn't bet on it.

Hit it again this morning, today being a c/r day. A good call as the overall size was down by an inch on most caught. We did have 8 that were right at 13" but they're still swimming. The bite window was narrower this morning, shutting off by about 8:30, but from 7 until then it was a wild bite with several 8-10 cast/catches for each of us. Great weather at mid-70s by 8 here.
