Outer Banks 2023
« on: 06/18/23 09:05 UTC »
Spent the past week kayak fishing the Roanoke Sound in Nags Head, NC. Weather was decent enough.  Most of the wind came in from the west to south west. I got caught in one storm at 4:00am that brought 16 mph winds and big white cap waves with it that kept breaking over the nose of the kayak almost swamping me. Had to hunker down for about 45 minutes behind a bridge pillar and questioned my decision making abilities.  In my defense there was nothing showing on the radar when I went out at 3:00am.
Numbers were not great but most were solid. Even got a new to me fish, two black sea bass. Biggest were two 18-20” trout and a 22” striped bass.

A few more. They seemed to prefer the 3.5 Ripper profile, a 3” twitch minnow, 3” shrimp, and the occasional 3-4” Gulp shrimp. A few came on a Mannic Mullet hair jig with a Slick Shiner trailer. The Free Style jig head preformed excellently with my plastics and the Gulp products. The Manic Mullet did well too.

Nice fish. Job well done. Those trout look like a fine eating fish.

Good stuff.  Thanks for sharing.  Always fun to see what people are doing out on the water.

I fished brackish waters 30 plus years back, so I can appreciate the trout and flounder as potential targets... and I've also had storms come upon me while the bite was good, yet chose to keep fishing, which (in the onslaught of the lighting) made me question my own judgment as well... I appreciate the reality aspect of your story even more than the fish!

I know I'm a bit late, but another great report! Congrats on a fine day of fishing!

I grew up fishing brackish water, and realized the other day, that I had not fished any tidal water now for about 10 years.  :(

Lol, thanks for taking time to read it. I never thought I would be saltwater fishing especially from the yak. I have to admit it is a blast. Even the smaller fish are crazy strong fighters. I hope to get out on the big water next year and see what I can catch.
