This little guy showed up this morning....
« on: 07/07/22 10:46 UTC »

It was one of eight we caught along with an 18" walleye for dinner tonight. Both hit a 6" shallow stick bait retrieved along a weedline in 3 feet of water. Only one pike was short of the 36" measuring tape, all others were longer.

Around here (northern Indiana) all are big pike are down deep. Can't catch anything but hammer handles shallow! If you want a big pike; have to wait until October or get them the first two weeks the ice goes off in the spring.

We were fishing Lake Pepin where a small feeder creek dumps into the lake. Its a sand flat that covers maybe three acres with the creek entering on the upstream edge. The water varies from 2 to 6 feet with most being in the 3 foot range. The weeds are just now beginning to show on the surface so fishing top water baits was fairly weed-free. The creek water is cold, coming from springs located in the bluffs and valleys along the river. We've had a toon of rain in the area so the springs are really pumping in the chilly water and the minnow life is just thick along the cold seams. That's where the pike are at too. The hotter, the better with the cold water flowing in.

4" Rippers on weighted hooks are doing a number too but these tend to be quite large pike and 40 pound braid is hardly a challenge for the teeth. We've played with some tyable wire for leaders but the stuff really mutes the Ripper's action. The stick baits are some I've painted from China and have enough hooks that the pike don't have much luck getting the bait past the front of the mouth.

We were back to this location again Tuesday AM [yesterday] following a major cold front and things were not so good. We fished three hours and caught one half decent pike of about 38" and a    three-pound largemouth. We watched the bass chasing minnows in a foot of water for maybe ten minutes and then went on the prowl. It took three casts to get it to hit. As we slipped back out to somewhat deeper water the pike hit a bait tossed in three feet. We saw one other hit but generally we felt the fishing was slow, but then that cold front only hours before.......
