Most of the copper blades are polished, then coated. I use casting lures that are copper/orange stripe on Lake Superior for Salmon and Lake Trout. They do not tarnish until box rash breeches the coating, then they'll begin to tarnish. I can polish the blades up again and add the stripe of orange tape but the polish has a short life without the coating. I'm trying a dip in Seal Coat the next time I polish one of the lures.... see how long that will protect the polish job.

I appreciate dat heads-up, Tom Bro🇺🇸

I searched that and yes, the Copper blades are coated.  I will remove that and let them patina!

So by letting it patina you will loose the flash that normally you would want on a blade. So are you saying a dull blade would entertain a strike in certain conditions where a flash wouldn't ? I like it. That is so outside the box.

That is precisely what I sm proposing, Boss Man Lamar🇺🇸

The more-subdued, natural Sunfish/Panfish-based colors, I believe would be served very well with a darker matte blade rather than the usual shine.
When Hildebrandt blades turn, they turn fast, producing a blur.  I think the matte, patinate blade would pair very well to the skirt colors in question, possibly bringing more attention to the skirt, and definitely showing the fish something different.

I'll add to this later...

One thing I have noticed with copper when fished side by side with, say, gold or polished brass, is that the copper will get hits much deeper down.... consistently.... on certain days. As a quick for-instance: I fished an absolutely blue bird day last fall and caught a couple trout on a gold bait with an orange stripe while casting into about 80 feet of water. The hits came at around the 60-foot mark. When things slowed up enough to warrant a color change, I went to polished copper with an orange stripe. On my second cast I got hit as soon as I began the retrieve after allowing the lure to hit bottom. Nothing changed except the lure's metal color. My theory is that copper takes on a deeper color in deeper water even though the water is crystal clear.... much like red going brown as it goes deeper. I'm certain any flash the copper made was subdued compared to the gold lure just taken off. Again, this is just my theory. And to further my idea I was fishing along side of three buddies who all had the gold lures on and were dropping them to the bottom just as I was doing in basically the same area. After three hook-ups they decided to go copper and two of them got fish almost immediately.

Interesting, Tom 🤔
I wonder if the color of the Copper, being more red, gets filtered out the deeper in the water column it is.

Gold is more yellow so it probably displays its truer color for longer.

Regarding blade's shine, flash on a spinnerbait:
Surely it doesn't have to shine/flash.  Potentially we've just been programmed to see it as "just the way it is", and "flashy blades" have been advocated, perpetuated, with little opposing data.

With a patinate Copper Hildebrandt blade, the design and weight benefits of said blade remain, but the bright color and flash are removed.

When I imagine what this probably looks like underwater, especially with a grass/heavy cover background, from a fish's perspective, I like what I see.

100%, Lamar.

Similar "phenomenon" as a silent hardbait vs. a rattlebait.  Several times I've seen heavy-rattling lipless cranks shut the bite down completely.  Put those away and within minutes, the bite resumes.

Sometimes it's just too much.

Edit:  (my "uncommon" emojis won't show here)  I've seen lipless cranks shut down the bite for people not throwing the rattler.  Minutes after the environment goes quiet again, the bite starts again.

Sometimes we make the same mistakes with other things like action (motion) and flash (light), in some cases/scenarios.

Like all the fancy paint jobs with ultra detail, shiny sells, but little shine catches every bit as many fish. People are just suckers for shiny.... anglers no less to the rule. I catch Salmon and Lake Trout on Krocodile lures that are 15 years old and that have lost their glitz. As you have said Gary, the only thing that has changed is the lack of flash however I have added new hooks.

I agree 100%, Mr. Tom Bro!

Speaking of Spinnerbaits, my 3/16 oz. Shad Head cavity (wire keeper) is about to get modified to take a spinnerbait wire.  Will use a single #3 Hildebrandt Willow for less resistance and a single #3.5 Hildebrandt Willow for more resistance.  Strictly "super stainless" .035" wire frames, and trimmed down to slightly-compact its overall profile from the original wire size.

"Metallic Pearl Gray" for a Shad color.
"Green Pumpkin Magic Craw" for a darker color with Juvenile Warmouth in mind.
That's all you really need.

My first stop yesterday was at a pond I've caught several solid LM Bass in, through the years.  Since the wind was blowing I started with a 3/8 oz. spinnerbait.
I tend to use smaller blades than most, seems like, especially with Hildebrandts.  The single #4 Hildebrandt Willow was replaced by a single #3.5 Hildebrandt Willow on the 3/8 oz. head and I was surprised at how well that little blade kept the bait high without having to burn it.
Lesson: Learned.

When I imagine what this probably looks like underwater, especially with a grass/heavy cover background, from a fish's perspective, I like what I see.

My favorite bass lure for muddied water is a very heavily dressed and large spinnerbait, with the biggest all black Colorado blades that will fit. That has nothing to do with flash, and everything to do with vibration & pushing water.

I also use some painted blades, copper blades and black nickel that provide a subdued flash for some lures.

I agree with you and what others have said, that flash is not everything, and sometimes too much. It's often asked what size blades should be used on specific size spinnerbaits and other lures using spinner blades and most will tell you use the biggest size blade for the lure weight, but I've also used much smaller and had better results.

Nothing with what we do should ever be considered the only way, absolute, or always the best way. You guys have made some very good points and there's a time & place for loud or flashy and a time a place for a lot less noise & flash. If more folks stopped being stubborn about what they use, they might find that they get better results.  ;D
