Been in Alaska for the last ten days and while there I did an evening road trip each night to look for moose. I took different roads every night. We saw a mess of moose, mostly feeding and a half mile away. This one we the exception. She was first seen in the road ditch as we drove along but wasn't too fond of the vehicle so close and she wandered up behind some tall scrub. We could see she was moving in the direction we came from so on our return trip we were able to spot her again and when I got 100 yards ahead, I stopped and turned off the van and quietly got out and slipped up the embankment a ways and waited. It wasn't long and she made her appearance just above me, but my scent must have blown uphill and she stopped and tared right at me. Honestly I don't think see could quite figure out what I was as I was able to get this picture from about 20-25 feet before she whirled around and took her leave.
We saw tons of moose on these evening drives, but this was the closest I could get to one.
Fun vacation, but the halibut charter we've had booked for months got canceled due to the weather and water conditions. bummed about that but we'll re-book the next time we visit Alaska.
