crappies were on this morning.
« on: 09/30/24 14:06 UTC »
We fished a river backwater this morning and crappies were liking the 2-1/4" Fry bait. Purple/chartreuse tails, fished on a 1/16 ballhead with a keeper wire and #4 Victory black nickel V-Loc hook. I kept 5 for a meal and probably could have gotten by with the larger three but we like a fish sandwich the next day too.

My buddy was putting the hurt on some major-league sunfish while I managed the crappie bite. Honestly, I don't think we've ever seen sunfish in the numbers and size that we are seeing right now in this location. Nine inch to 10" sunnies are common right now.... and some even larger. And they're eating the same thing I am tossing for crappies only on a size 6 Victory V-Loc. The fishing is weird in that he is nailing the sunnies maybe only 15 feet from where I am catching mostly crappies. We're fishing the same depth. This morning it was a matter of shade on the water.... he fished in water that was well sunlit while I was casting right on the edge of some shade. Made all the difference in what would be caught.

We started in the dark today, as we usually do, and by 8:30 the bite was nil. I the 2-1/2 hours we fished I think we unhooked maybe 75-80 fish. Fun times. Maybe doing it all over again on Friday.

Ain’t nothing quite like a good feeding frenzy. I’ve tried your chartreuse/purple pattern many times on my waters and just can’t get them to like it. For me it’s been fire tiger, blue over silver, or monkey milk.

Our biggest issue presently is lack of water. Our local lakes are down 12’-15’ with no rain in the forecast for at least another week or two.

Many of our waterways are running lower than normal too. Not to the extent you're seeing but still low.

Most all of the water I fish is heavily stained from leaves and weeds in a state of decomposition. The purple/chartreuse contrasts wonderfully with the water so fish can see the baits well. In water that is relatively clear, like in your picture, I'll switch to a chartreuse shad color or a clear plastic body that has some real fine holo string glitter in it with the chartreuse tail. I have a string glitter from Didspade.com that's .008 called Shredz Party Crasher that works super well in the clear plastic in clear water. I buy it by the half pound!

Its interesting how different locations on this continent have different color preferences.

Sorry the picture posted sideways. Still don’t know why it does that when I post from my phone.

I went today and only caught four but the weather was awesome. Mid 60's to 70's. Of course bass. Crappies are for sissies.
