New River Smallmouth Trip
« on: 07/31/22 19:10 UTC »
Had a hot but wonderful fishing trip to the New River in southern WV last weekend. Thursday to Sunday the WV smallies we’re ready to play whether we were wading or floating. My single man Fish Cat pontoon preformed awesome. I was afforded the opportunity to ride front seat in my buddy’s Mad River canoe one day. There’s one section that is pretty dicey and a line has to be picked preferably river right. He took her straight down the middle. Next thing I could see is a wave about 4’ over my head and then it was over. He lost several pieces of gear but we made it to shore alive. And we got to test out our life jackets. My biggest was 16”. Lost a few that were in the 18-20” range.  Baits that got bit the most Whopper Plopper, some KO wiggle warts I painted up, the mad tom, the Ripper and Slick Shiner. Definitely good to get out and recharge.
