My go to crappie baits

Asked elsewhere what my favorite crappie are, I got this picture in answer.



On the top left to right: The left two are 1-1/2 inch Thump-Its. A Keitech look-alike is on the right. From the left on the bottom are two 2-1/4" Fry baits as they come from the mold. Then two more Fry baits with eyes and dressed up a bit to mimic small sunfish. The clear coat to secure the eyes bulks the bodies up on these too. On the right is a 2" Ripper.

I don't pour any plastics, but I do favor the chartreuse too. That pearl & chartreuse would be something I would use often!

I'll try most any colors and bait styles, but generally have always used tubes, grubs or the beetles. I had picked up some minnow shaped bodies too from an Ebay seller, but never did real well with them. I actually caught more bass on them than I did Crappies or other panfish. Small bass, nothing big, tossed them on ultralight tackle, by front hooking them weightless on an Owner Mosquito hook. Can't cast them very far, but they would get some bites.

Yes. The aluminum mold. He'll do the mold with individual injection ports but it's so skinny I didn't see any advantage to it.

Thanks Tom. I have a fry mold and a thump it but the little longer Baitmold looks interesting. It does look thin which I would think lends itself to a lot of tail action. Like you, not sure what it would look like dual injected.

  It kills me to say it but I bought a few crappie molds this winter. I've decided to take the year off on tournament fishing and practice Live Scoping. The guys that are good at are just winning to much and I need to learn it better. So since it was first designed for crappie and crappie are the first to bite in the spring I would learn to target them in brush piles and ledges. And then because there're always moving to target white bass and then smallmouth and largemouth. So we'll see how this crappie fishing goes. I'm pretty sure I won't keep any I get my fill of fish when I go to Canada for this year three weeks.

Early spring and late fall crappies are some super good eating Lamar. You should save a few to try.

  I keep a couple of walleyes a day for shore lunch when up in Canada but never bring any home. This year after our week in the bush we're going to take two weeks to come home and camp and canoe along the way in the Boundary Waters and across the top of Lake Superior and down through Michigan. The goal there would be is to catch fish for dinner. But other than that I'm a catch and release guy. Eating a walleye out on an island on a remote Canadian lake will spoil you and make you only want it that way. Nothing against you that keep fish. It's your right to do so.
