hooks
« on: 02/26/13 16:53 UTC »
For the last three or four years I have been using sickle hooks in all of my jigs....walleye and panfish sizes. I really like them. I can't say that I have noticed any improvement over the hook-up, but those fish that get stuck sure seem to stay on the hook better. Has anyone seen anything to the contrary?

No.  I agree that the hook ups are better.  They seem to be a little more brittle and more prone to break vs bend.  Sharp rascals.

I just think they look cool  :D I agree they are sharp dudes. I wish the barbs were a touch bigger. I like the fact the gap is a little bigger as well. I found captain hooks are the best priced. My favorite is a #4 gold. I use #6 on 1/16  and 2&4 on 1/8

I love the matzuo sickle hooks, may just be me but I find that they have a better hook up rate than some of the other 90 degree hooks I've used to make my jigs.

I'm well invested in Matzuos right now. I use only the black nickel hooks. They don't like to bend like an eagle claw aberdeen but then I don't have to think about hitting them with the hone efore I hit the water either. My biggest complaint with the Matzuo sickles so far is handling them while casting heads. They are some kind of sharp.

I love these hooks as well.  I've handled and worked with every hook in the Do-It catalog and for the money... these would place very high on the list.  They are VERY popular with the Walleye and Panfish guys which is probably why the supply can become an issue.  The added gap helps immensely in holding a fish once hooked and combined with a sticky sharp point... well they are hard to beat for the money.

Are the black nickel harder. I had some red #4's that bent really easy. I think they hold better because of the angle in the radius of the hook. Much like the holding ability of the mustad triple grip. mike

They are the best choice for panfish IMHO.  But they dont work too well for bass!  I lose more bass on sickles than i do using equivelant size in an aberdeen(this is just something ive noticed while crappie fishing).

Mike....I think the black hooks are harder than the red. I think it may have something to do with the plating process...maybe the temper gets run up a little harder because of plating temps.

I don't think I lose as many fish using these hooks. I am convinced that the elbow bend in the bend of the hook helps keep it from sliding around as much. Kind of helps to keep the bend of the hook in place.

Mike....Those black nicks right out of the package are the sharpest hooks I have ever handled out of the package. Gammis don't hold a candle to them in my opinion.

Black Nickel in the sickles are in my opinion are the best. 2-4-6 always. Keep 1/8-1/16-1/24-1/32 and even 1/64oz..And they always hook into the meaty part of the roof of the mouth
