Pike Baits

Making some northern pike baits for when we go to Canada next September. We've always made baits that are flashy and bright. But the last few years have noticed that baits that looked more natural have worked better. To many time when catching a walleye and bring it to the boat a big pike grabs it. So this year I made a few spinner baits that looks like a walleye.

Nice looking Pike Baits! You can never make them too big!

Magnum bladed swim jigs are Northern Pike candy! Use the same mold as your spinnerbaits but cut the wire and attach them to the bottom of the blade (heavy wire is tough to get a nice wrap though!)

Whenever I take a guest out that has never caught a Northern Pike I always put on a "Shakee"

Real early spring fishing in the backwaters will find big pike hanging on white or chartreuse spinner baits. Along about June I like red/black spinner baits.

For sure!!!... if I'm going purposefully for big pike, I use my musky gear, and the magnum chatters are a long time favorite to have in the mix.

 Those hooks are a 5/0 VMC stinger hook. I'll smash the barb down before I fish them so it will be easier to remove.

I've always tilted my head like an unsure dog when I see the wild lures used for Pike and Musky, and knew I'd do things my Naturalist way if I ever targeted those fish.

If they're "so hard to get to bite", why not imitate actual forage better???

Use the big spinners and plugs, sure, but go natural on the colors.
Swimbaits, natural colors.
Eels, natural colors.

Walleye fishin', too.
Why not natural?

I also make some large/heavy spinnerbaits, up to 2 1/2 oz., but there are no Pike or Muskies here, so they're Striped bass lures for me.  I began tossing big spinnerbaits years ago for Stripers, when everyone else was tossing the road runner style bucktail jigs. ( I make them too.) Just something different, and I had many times caught Stripers on spinnerbaits when tossing them for LM bass in brackish water. 

I use a couple of different hooks, mostly 7/0, VMC makes one and Owner Long Shank hooks are another I really like, although they are expensive.  I'll use Mustad spinnerbait & O'Shaughnessy hooks too in 5/0 for some of the weights. 

I use the Do It Style H, and the modified Poisontail molds in the larger sizes, and will dress them with bucktail or silicone skirts. 

Spinnerbaits are certainly a versatile type of lure with many uses.
