Has anyone tried this?
« on: 08/08/24 15:59 UTC »
This is quite a bit out of my comfort zone because I am more of an ultralight fisherman so I thought I would run it by you folks to see if you have done it.  I watched a mikeyballz you tube video where he had been fishing a large 7 inch fluke style bait (it was a specialty JDM soft plastic at $16.00 a pop).  Anyways he was getting a very bright signature return on his FFS but after his baits got too torn up to fish he put on a magnum zoom fluke and noticed he could barely see it.  He opened up the JDM bait and found a piece of aluminum foil inside of the bait.  The point of his video was to ask his viewers for hacks on securing aluminum foil in his flukes.  I thought immediately about trying this with the wutz-it molds.  It would seem to me that a small piece of foil loosely wrapped around the hook slot post might be enough or maybe hand pouring the bottom of the bait then  stick the foil in while the plastic is still hot then close it up and shoot it. I havent tried either method yet.  Thought I would check here first but I love tinkering with new ideas and this seems plausible.  Let me know what you think?
I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.

Sounds like it would be pretty easy to do. I'd thought about getting some aluminum glitter or small shavings & mixing in petroleum jelly to try to make my own redneck attempt at the bait pop stuff   to help see it on ffs.

One would think with a 7 inch bait you could easily see it on FFS with or without foil.

I was thinking this too Lamar.

I know nothing about the FFS other than what has been written about it, but I've even used 10" flukes and they're a excellent bait at times. I got some from David Akiyama several years ago, in black to toss at Stripers.  I think he's a member here.

I too would think a big bait would show up, on that electronics with how they talk about using the small baits with it.

Yeah, I really know nothing about FFS, but it would seem to me that if it is relatively simple it would help expand your market for those who sell their baits (I don't do that either lol).

FFS uses ultrahigh frequency sound waves (like all sonar), it just has a faster (continuous full screen) update.

Metal (hard surfaces) reflects sound better than soft surfaces, but if the metal is buried within the plastic, its effects should be greatly (if not completely) diminished, so I'm guessing there is something else making the difference in signatures... maybe it's the composition of the plastic itself (which seems unlikely) or maybe it could be some harder finish such as paint on the surface of the bait, or (far more likely) it is the illusive nature of video editing to highlight the one and subdue the other as a gimmick to sell more of these high priced baits.

Basically, I hold the same thought process of Lamar (and Tom) where the difference should be negligible.

I know with a small 3 inch minnow I use a tungsten weight and it helps a lot with FFS. Most of how much you see is in your settings. I set mine so you still see some clutter in the water but you can also see your bait and the fish better. It's not something you just go out and do you have to spend hours on it and then there's always more to learn. The pros on tv make it look easy and it's not. Using bigger baits at first will help you see what you're looking for and then work your way down.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with seeing their bait is casting too far. One of the first things I learned with FFS was 60 feet is not near as far casting as I thought.
Another quick tip, zoom in on the water depth the fish are suspended in. Don’t try to look from top to bottom. If the fish are suspended at 12’ over 30’ of water only look down 20’. This will blow your screen up and make the bait pop.

Other than the foil idea, I thought of using glitter between the layers, thereby having a concentrated line inside.
I sell glitter and have every color imaginable. Today is gloomy, chilly with a chance of rain - no fishing. May try it and I'll post a photo after I do.
