tlangs31, welcome to the forum! I've tied & used a lot of bucktail jigs, and have used various jig head styles, Mostly it depended more on the weight I wanted for where they might be used and not as much for the fish species.
What weights are you interested in using? Do It has other styles that can work well for bucktails, but not all styles cover all weights, and there's some weight overlap between some very good styles.
Also, you say you're fishing lakes, but how & what conditions will you encounter? I use bucktails for Striped Bass here in Santee Cooper, in open water situations, but where LM bass may be, the same jigs don't work well due to vegetation and other snags, so that may also influence what jig head styles might be a good choice.
Here's two examples that I've tied that are not typical of a bucktail jig. The first is the Pony/Horse head style with a swivel & blade and they can be great for bass & other fish species.
The second is the Snootie, this one with a fiber weed guard and tied with bucktail & some feathers, which can be a good combination again for various fish species.
You can also tie spinnerbaits with bucktail hair and that can work well too, so you're not limited to only a jig type.
