Darter or bullet jig head?
« on: 03/24/13 17:04 UTC »
I'm looking for whichever jig head would be the most erratic, I've heard that it depends on how well it is balanced.  Any help would be appreciated.

Most of the action on a jig is given by the rod. If your using a loght jig go with spinning tackle. Heavier go with baitcasting; but thr stiffness of the rod tip will decide the amount of action to the jig.

As I understand it -- a center balanced jig is more suited for vertical fishing;  A back balance for cast and steady retrieve; and a front balance is for a nose lift and drop retrieve.   But; as Muskygary said; rod action and reel speed and timing are more important.

I plan on using lighter jigs on a cast and retrieve and am using spinning tackle.  So would the darter mold be better?  Sorry but I have no experience with either mold design.

Jerry V would be the "expert".  I would look at what size hook I wanted to use with a given head weight.  Both are center balance heads.  I do not own either mold but it appears they are pretty similar; with standard hook size being different.

Both of those baits are very similar and it likely depends a little on what bait you're using in conjunction with the jig, but the consensus here is that the Darter Jig has a bit more eratic action than the Bullet Jig.

Thanks to everyone, I plan to use size 1 to 2/0 and will likely be using small paddle or curlytail baits.

I pour the Darter 570/575...that head is pretty pointed, and looking at the Bullet head, the Darter seems to be more finely-pointed than the Bullet, so the Darter would probably lend a very slight improvement to erratic action...BUT, when You'll be using paddle/swim-tailed and curly-tailed baits, that tail's resistance is going to "take over" and it won't matter much what 'head You use.  Using straight-tailed baits, the 'head will make a bigger difference...say between the Round head and the Darter, You'll notice a difference in action.  A jighead rigged with a plastic that has a swim/paddle/curl tail with be controlled by the tail...the resistance is at the rear...similar scenario when You take a "darting" TopWater Bait and put a "prop" on the rear, it's ability to really dart/zig-zag is greatly reduced.

I'd go with the Darter, as it won't matter much with a swim-tailed bait, but when You rig a straight-tailed bait onto that Head, now that bait looks like it's been hanging out in the Coffee Pot District.  The Darter will serve double-duty here.

Read the OP (Original Post).  The Erie is my #1 'head, with the Darter in 2nd place...

For pure action a wobble head jig is hard to beat
