I thought I did it
« on: 11/29/21 16:25 UTC »
I woke up this morning to a temp of 45 with 10 to 20 mph winds.  So I hit up a local pond.  Found the fishing to be a little slow at first but started picking off a few as I moved.  Caught 4 nice keeper sized gills (2 oh which were very respectable redears).  A total of 6 dink bass also came to hand.  I was about to free the gills and leave when I decided to make a few more casts.  Then it hit and right at my feet.  Line started peeling off my ultralight and I held my breath when I caught sight of it.  I have never caught a 17 inch crappie.  Been close with 2 specimens that hit 16.5 but never 17.  I felt certain that this one would eclipse that mark..  I added him to my fish basket and left. As soon as I got him home I put the tape measure to him.  Wouldn't you know, 16.5 inches!  I may never hit that 17 inch mark, but it is awful fun trying.
I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.

It’s good to hear someone was able to get out. Congratulations on a slab crappie even though it didn’t crack the 17” mark.

Sounds like a nice specimen, but without pictures we can't be sure you even got a 16.5...  ::)

I hear you efish .  But to say that I am tech challenged is the understatement of the century.  I have tried several times to upload pictures to the forum using do-its instructions and can't make hide nor hair of them.

olsarge, I've been fishing about 60 years and have caught one Crappie in my lifetime that was 18". Caught it in a small private pond that I fished often, on a fly rod popper, so was really a special catch for me. That pond was located on property where I had worked and the biggest other species of fish I ever caught in there was a Pickerel around 20" long. I had caught 10" Crappies in there and there was bass in there too, but I never caught one over 3 pounds, so didn't ever expect a Crappie to be in there that size. That was over 40 years ago, and the biggest Crappie I've caught since has been 13 inches. It was a great feeling at the time and of course a big surprise, but kind of a let down too that I haven't even come close to that since then.

Nothing wrong with setting your goals high! LOL!   I hope that you do! Where I live now, near Santee Cooper in SC, there's some big Crappies caught, but again, I haven't caught one. I knew a guy many years ago that caught huge Crappies often, and he lived & fished in Illinois. He emailed photo's to me, of Crappies over 3 lbs, and over 20".  He sent me one of a mount that a taxidermist had done for him that had 3 Crappies, all over 2 1/2 lbs and one was over 3 lbs. That's the key, is fishing where there's a good chance of catching them. I hope you do catch that PB!

Here in Rochester we had a bait shop that was two blocks away from the lake in town, Silver Lake, when the once-thought gone forever Giant Canada Geese were re-discovered. That bait shop owner kept aquariums with game fish fry that came in with minnow shipments. Crappie, sunfish, bass, pike, you name it, he at one time or another had it in his tanks. Crappies got huge while residing in the largest tank. 19" huge. He'd take these big fat old suckers down to the lake and release them when they got too big for the glass home. A friend and I winter fished the lake because the power plant on the river upstream of the lake released warm water into it and the lake stayed open all winter. Both of us had the occasion to catch crappies of 17", 18" and yes, 19". All returned to the lake.

Pictures? This was well ahead of cell phones or digital camera and in fact before the so-called instamatic cameras, so no there weren't any pictures. So Sarge, I believe you. I believe in God too and certainly haven't needed to ask him for photographic proof of any of his miracles like so many here seem to think an angler needs to provide. Its ironic that some here who yack of catching big fish never ever have a picture of such. Like I said, Sarge; I believe you.
