Title: Two color Ripper swimbait
Post by: Fishermanbt on 01/08/18 16:10 UTC
Thought I would share my primitive DIY way I have been making two color Rippers since I don’t have a duel injector and a razor blade was just not garnishing consist results.
I started by outlining the mold cavity.

Then transferred the outline onto a scrap piece of wood using carbon copy paper. To the table saw and cut a rabbit half the baits thickness deep and half its width. Then removed the upper half of the bait profile with a dremel router bit.
Lay the bait in the recess tail paddle hanging over, place scrap wood block on top half of bait aligned with rabbit at the nose and at the tail. This put just enough pressure on the plastic to get a good fairly clean cut. Using a hand chopper found in the kitchen with some worm oil worked good especially after I put an edge on it (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180108/06f2e7344d785f842e25a3f1122a5a67.jpg)

I found that running the cut section across a hot knife helped level out any uneven places caused while cutting. Make sure to cut a 45 degree off the nose so the second color has room to enter the gate and not lift the bait. Place the upper halves into the mold with some worm oil on the tail section, align them, and shoot the belly color. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180108/535e5c6035e023fb9c4fef3c41343145.jpg)

Hope this makes sense. Most of my “projects” don’t.

When you shoot the belly color, do you lay the mold on its side and shoot slowly so the bait doesn't "float"?

Where there's a will, there's a way! Pretty slick trick!

Nope. Vertical as you would normally shoot, but yes I do shoot it slower with just a little extra pressure for about a 3-4 count. I was truly amazed at how well the bond is. No separation has been noted. I did get 2 floaters out of several lams but I think that was me shooting to fast or I didn’t get the nose cut right.

Them are some nice colors. Same with the paddle shad type mold shoot back color first and cut belly of and shoot the belly color. Great job

That is a cool idea and baits look great.
I noticed that when removing the ripper from the mold and then placing it back in for the next shot it's hard to get the tail back in. Especially on the ES Ripper mold because it's more course. I've learned to rub a little worm oil just on tail end and that will help a lot.

You’re right Lamar. A little worm oil does wonders. I put a dab of oil down in the bottom corner of the ES mold where the info is printed. Take the top half laminates and rub the tail in it, and place it in the mold. Keeps me from getting oil all over the place or using to much. A little goes a long way. I add another drop about every 2-3 pours to keep the cavity oiled.

Here’s an attempt at using some automotive pearl to make a somewhat trout looking pattern. Poured the bait I wanted the middle which is a pearl changing rose red to a rose silver. Then cut the belly and poured the clear glitter. Then cut the back and poured a watermelon glitter.

Great trout color. Really there is no limit to the fun and different color combos we can come up with.

No kidding, I got the fever so bad I went to the store the other day and bought a bunch of plaster of paris and have been making two piece molds that last three days.  Keeps me busy and focused on the important stuff lol.
