Title: Midwest Finesse Rig
Post by: Do-it Rep on 03/20/18 11:38 UTC
Our newest addition to the growing library of Do-It soft plastic molds –the Midwest Finesse Rig mold –an 8 cavity mold that compliments one of our hottest molds - the Midwest Finesse Jig mold is now available!  Those of you who have fished the Ned Rig already understand the fish catching command these baits have. They stand up straight when on bottom and several different actions can be achieved by adding softener to these little fish magnets.

I had some great days chucking these up on sand flats on some of our interior rivers last summer while testing them.  A Midwest Finesse wiggling in their face through the sand with a little Hawg Sauce was too much for summer time smallies and walleyes to resist.

In the words of the late JerryV - “Try and throw that in Volga Lake and get it back.”

The Midwest Finesse Rig mold is now available by calling Jordan at 866-984-3648 and will be available for web purchase at www.do-itmolds.com later next week.

That is a sweet jig mold Lamar. I cast up a couple hundred of the heads for samples and they went in a hurry. They are really catching on with the walleye guys around here.

Any ideas on how much softener to add per 8 ounces?

If you're not fishing it then you need to. It's one of those baits that just works when the bite is tough. And not just on small fish either. The last few years we've finished our limit out a few times on this bait. Don't over look it.

Can't wait to get mine ordered it this week. Just wondering how some of you are going to get it to float so when you have it on the jig the back end stands up. I use do-its plastic and it sinks so the bait won't stand up.

Not sure what you're talking about. I use Do-its ES plastic and they float like a bobber.

I use the same and they sink.

Looks like the baits in the pic are hug up on the sides of the glass.

LOL ! that is not the case. If you add salt or glass media it will sink. But just straight plastic it floats.

That or you injected some air in them. I think the latter. Didn't ya Lamar? Huh? Didn't ya?

Lamar and I went fishing this morning, of course in Lamar's nice boat.
I can vouch for Lamar, those baits aren't on the glass, they are in fact floating.  I stirred them in that glass and they popped back up to the surface.

I know right ? I do believe the old Do-it plastic would sink. But not the new ES plastic. They float.

The crystal clear soft formula floats real nice as long as the jig weight isn't unreasonable. My Essential is more neutrally buoyant but a stand alone bait will support itself in water.

I don't fish this bait but I fish the jig and the jig stands plastics up fairly well.

Finally had a chance to make some finesse baits with a brand new batch of essential series plastic and guess what they sink. I also order some crystal clear soft and with that plastic they do float. I am really surprised that it is advertised that the bait will float on the web site with the essential series plastic.

Just curious but where did you see it advertised that this bait  floats with ES plastic?

It says it right in the description for the Midwest finesse rig plastic mold on the do- it website.

I think where the confusion is coming from is Chubs is that you are taking "floating" to literally. The Essential series plastic if well mixed and no salt or other weighting media added to it is slightly better than neutrally buoyant. Lamar's picture clearly shows a bait ON the water. Now add the jig that the bait was designed to be used with, even the smallest, and that buoyancy is gone except at the weighted end which will settle in such a fashion that the remaining bait will stand up readily because it is still buoyant without any weight to hinder it. Other jigheads may not allow this to happen because they're not designed to work specifically with this plastic bait like the Midwest Finesse Heads are.

Consider too that glitter and hi lite/pearl additives weigh something and if lots are added to the plastic they can affect the ability to float and some colorants alone are pigment heavy, white and chartreuse come to mind quickly, and if those are added heavy enough to opaque the baits color they too can negate the ability to float.

Floating is a term that rides a fine line and we, as plastic makers, can do a lot to change whether or not the plastic can float or not.

The essential series plastic will not float on its own even when  pored just strait up, it flat out sinks. So when you you use it with the midwest finesse jig it falls over. When using this set up the worm is supposed "float" so that the jig stands straight up to impart its action and not fall over. When I used the crystal clear soft plastisol the rig works like it should because the plastic floats with color and flake added to it.

So what does the word float mean? sink

I see it now. It really shouldn't say "float". It will stand up with the midwest finesse head but that is because of the head not the plastic. Even though it does float for a little while on it's own it doesn't take long in the water to absorb enough water to make in sink.

Yes it shouldn't say float. I was messing around at a buddies place  scuba diving so we decided to drop some baits(midwest finesse rigs) down and see how they react in the water. Every time the bait would fall over on the bottom when using the essential series plastisol. Then we tried it with the crystal clear the bait stud up all the time like it should. No salt was used at all in the baits just 4 drops of green pumpkin and a smidge of red glitter sold by do-it. Then when we were done we dropped the worms in the water and the essential series plastic worm sunk and the crystal clear worm floated. If i would have known this I would have never bought 2.5 gallons of essential series plastisol. The good thing that i learned out the test was I don't need to use as much salt in my seiko style baits when using essential series plastisol.
