Title: Dents in 6” Ripper
Post by: Bobkool on 04/07/19 11:07 UTC
I just started this new hobby of making my own plastics this winter. Expensive, but lots of fun.
I’m a walleye guy, so started out with the Ripper swimbait molds, all single cavity, dual and single injectors, lots of colour and glitter options. I currently have 3 Ripper molds including the new 6” Ripper. I’m having a problem with dents in the largest part of the body on the 6” one. Have tried pouring at various temperatures 300-350, release mold from clamps right after injecting, top off mold with plastisol. The mold had different sized opening on the gates, one side was smaller than the other, so I filed it out to be the same size as the other. Still getting dents almost every time. Only thing I can think of that I haven’t tried was an extender. Any suggestions?
I also have been pouting some lead for the first time in over 20 years. Found all my old Do-It molds and melting pot and other pouring supplies. Got both sizes of the new swimbait heads. Looks like it will be an awesome combination with the Rippers.
Having trouble trying to add pictures to this post. What am I doing wrong? Pictures load as attachments, but when I go to post, it freezes up.

Hi and welcome.  Try holding pressure after you inject for about 15 seconds then top off the bait.

Forgot to mention that I have tried holding pressure up to 20 seconds as well

Welcome Bobkool. Hold pressure and top leave clamped for a few minutes to let the plastic to set up on the big part of the body.

Welcome to the forums Do-It Bob. I don't have that 6" mold and will in all likelihood pass on it so I can't offer any help with the dents in it. I do like the 3, 3 1/2 and 4 inch Rippers though. I do think that the 6" chunk would be a great one for Lake Trout though.

Again, welcome. These guys will get you fixed up.

Welcome Bob. Love the color on that Swimbait head. What paint are you using for it? It’s nice and would make a good silicone jig head color. You may want to try opening the gate some on the mold. Both halves. I have had some success doing this on some problematic molds and then keep them topped off as they are cooling. Just a dremel with a tapered stone works well. Shoot it as cool as you can too.

Thanks guys. I have been following and reading hundreds of posts over the winter and this is my first time posting a question. Lots of great info here. I did make the gates a bit bigger on both sides, still getting dents. It takes a pile of plastisol to fill this mold.
The swimbait jig head was painted with powder paints. This one was kind of a mistake and don’t know exactly how to replicate it. Have done some that are similar. It’s probably my favourite one.
Having lots of fun learning something new.
I am a walleye tournament guy and have been doing this for over 30 years. I fish mostly with livebait. Leaches and crawlers. We are not allowed to use live minnows here in Saskatchewan. Have always carried some plastics, but don’t use them much. Played around with swimbaits last year and had incredible results on occasion. Was using a 6’ Havoc Grasspig and a 3/4 oz swimbait head. Walleye and sauger inhaled it so the bait was completely gone most of the time. Thought this would be a great addition to my arsenal.
Here are a couple more pictures.

Tom, I agree the 6” Ripper is a hawg, but we have lots of walleye up here over 10lbs, so definitely going to give it a shot. I also do a fly in trip to Cree Lake that has lots of big lakers and humongous Northern Pike. Plan on taking a bunch of these up there this June and give them a workout.
Here is a picture of the biggest pike from last year that my buddy caught. 53 inches long with a 21.5 inch girth. Estimated her at 33-35 lbs. Also one of the better Lake Trout that was caught.

Wow, Bob. Those are pigs, in anybody’s definition! The good news is that the fish don’t care a flying flip if a few have dents or not, if you can’t keep them from denting. We love pics like this. Again, welcome aboard!!!

I love lakers that size. Keeps a guy real busy. Little time for mischief.

Welcome Bobkool. Wow, those are pigs. As for the Ripper, I don't have that mold, but I do have some larger molds that will dent if shot too hot and too fast. You might try a little cooler plastic with a slow injection. Helped me with my dent problems. Hope it helps with yours as well.

Really nice fish Bobkool hope that the big swimbait problem is gone. I mainly use the 3” and 3.5 Ripper with great success on walleyes and I’m going to get the 6” for pike and muskies on a over sized chatter bait I’m making. And the 3” Ripper will make a 1/4 oz round ball jig move side to side with out killing the action of the bait and is the only bait of it’s size that can do it.

Sir what blade are you using for a over sized chatter bait?? I'm trying the same ideal myself.

Welcome Bob,

I have found the 6" Ripper to shoot best at cooler temps, 300-320 degrees. Like previously mentioned, holding firm pressure is key. Lastly, be sure to leave the bait in the mold for a bit before removing it. This bait has a lot of volume. You will notice that if you remove the bait from the mold right after it is shot, the center of the body will remain somewhat liquid. This will cause it to dent and deform as it cures. I typically leave the bait in the the mold for a minute or so, to assure that the bait is solidifying. If you are shooting the bait consecutively, you will likely need to adjust the setup time accordingly. In the instance that you are shooting a large batch of these, I have found that hanging them by their tails after allowing them a little bit of time to cure in the mold, helps tremendously with speed and consistency.

Let me know if you have any questions.
