We hit the docks at the Lake City marina yesterday hoping to hit pay dirt on some mega-sized crappies but they couldn't see the baits. When we first arrived we went to the breakwater to cast rip rap thinking that local catches of big crappies had been happening a bit down stream a couple days prior, but the river had since come up another foot and the water color was thin mud. I didn't have any plastics done up in dark mud so hopes of a contrast color went away fast. After an hour of nothing we slipped into the marina and hit the docks. No current but the water was still heavy with silt. We figured about 5 feet above where we'd normal final the water at this time of the year. Fishing was slightly better, handing us a couple large crappies and a smaller one, a sunfish and a small walleye.
The Mississippi River is a mess to say the least and the forecast for the next week is only "sort of" optimistic. The backwaters we normally would have preferred to fish would require much longer legs and some serious wader modifications. Like so many areas of the country, we don't need any more rain for a month or two.

Hear that on the rain. The farmers here are dealing with and trying to get the beans off and the rain has given them fits like it did in the spring when they were trying plant there crops.
