Title: PB Walleye on Custom Tackle
Post by: brennan.chapman on 11/11/19 10:35 UTC
Over the weekend I landed my personal best Walleye, finally exceeding the 30" mark. Many seasons of coming up just shy of that magical number, but now it is here!
To make things even better, she was caught out of a local river here in Iowa on 100% custom gear. A 1/4oz Teardrop rigged with a Florida Grape Zipper Goby was enough to trick this old monarch. Unfortunately I did not get an official weight on her, but based on the online calculators for Walleye weights, she would have likely come just shy of the Iowa state record with the measurements of 30 3/4" in length and 18 7/8"of girth.

She was released for another angler to enjoy. Thrilled!

Awesome eye Brennan. You can go along time and never catch one like that if at all. But than again with slot limits a reduced limits it has really helped the size of eye’s by me.

Love the straight, un-painted, lead head. I've gone to that pretty much for my walleye fishing. Sauger seem to like some color but walleye will just nail baits with un-painted heads.

Thank you! You are absolutely right, especially in this state. Unfortunately we don't have slots in place on a good majority of our waters, other than select pools on the Mississippi and a few lakes that desperately needed them. We spend a lot of money to stock them but we don't protect them. Too many harvesters and not enough sportsman. Is what it is!

Awesome pics.  That's what it's all about!  There is something special about catching fish in our interior rivers so close to home. Then to catch a fish of that caliber, well that really speaks volumes.  Great fish, you've certainly earned it.

Sure beats ice fishing, right?  ;)

Thank you! Catching her close to home definitely makes it that much more special.

It most definitely beats ice fishing!  8)

Got lucky one day a few years ago a got 3 over 28” and 2 over 29” 50 lbs of fish on 5 cast one after the other all released. Had a buddy of mine stop to see what I was up to and watched me catch them and he said it was unreal to see that done from shore.

Thank you! Honestly for what little more replicas cost, the longevity of them, and the abilities that these specialized taxidermists have to make a blank mold come to life, I was happy to see her swim away and will be even happier when I get her twin back in six months.

Brennan the funny thing was I could have taken a step off the rocks and would have been in a 21’ ranger of a guy that was guiding. They got 2 and left after I got 5
