Title: Clean hook eye on jigs
Post by: andrewlamberson on 12/19/19 12:47 UTC
Here is a little trick I learned to keep my hooks eyes clean of any paint.

I use 3/32 heat shrink tubing (or 1/8) and using the length of tubing I put the end over the hook eye and then shrink it over the heat gun. You should leave the lead under the hook eye showing for full head coverage. The way the tubing shrinks normally pulls it up from the lead. After it is tight, cut above the eye leaving a little tab to grab a hold of to remove the tubing. I remove the tubing immediately after powder painting the jig while the tubing is still soft and pliable and removes easily, normally about 5 seconds after I take the jig off the heat.

I do all my jigs with the tubing first and then paint them. FAST and easy!

How many times do you reuse the heat shrink (if any)?

It's a one and done deal. But a package of tubing does a lot of jigs! (50 +).

Great tip.  I usually use a wire wheel in my dremel between painting and baking but always seem to hit the head on a couple and have to redo them.

I will keep an eye out for it in a small inside diameter so it fits tight.

The heat shrink seals around the eye so no powder paint gets up on the eye. Plus it works on 5/0 down to crappie size eyes.
