Title: Crankin thru some crappies
Post by: ctom on 01/30/20 16:04 UTC
Did these this morning on a smaller size body than the other crappie cranks I make. This is the second smallest bait I paint and the crappie pattern worked out real nice on these. Some hooks and hot air to make the snow go away and these will be fish ready. I can't wait.

I'm going to do a few different colors in this crappie pattern. Its a fun pattern to paint and the crappies have been more than willing to show their cannibalistic side while cranking these guys in.

Sweet cranks there Tom. Finally slowed down at work so I might have some time to go in the shop and play. I have to build a area for the rod wrapper and get the 5 rods that I’ve got in parts done.

These are the Shelt's Crappie Crankbait. I haven't seen them listed since last fall so I don't know if they'll a thing of the past or what the deal is. The bodies on these are only a fraction over an inch. I have a bag of thirty eight, well 34 now. I'll be using them sparingly since they are a great bait in the catching department. I sure hope they become available agin....I'd order a hundred.

I had a bunch of fun with this particular bait last August waiting for the be surgery day. Great slow retrieve action. They run quite shallow so a lot of these have been bored and some #5 lead shot slipped inside with the bb that came in it. I think I added 5 of the lead shots to the baits I drilled. I used some really heavy gel super glue to plug the holes then ran some super fine wet-or-dry sandpaper over the plug to smooth things out. Don't even now they've been altered. The extra weight gets them down to crappie  type summer water fairly fast then a nice steady but not super fast start and stop retrieve. When the bait stops but before it begins to sink more is when the hits come. Ironically, those small mouthed sunfish hit the hardest.
