Title: Open Pour Molds
Post by: Muskygary on 03/31/20 12:24 UTC
It seems like open pour swimbaits are the rage right now. Wondering if Do-it would consider making a open pour ripper in 4.5, 6, 8 inches? How many would like this and would buy molds?

Gary,

We've considered an Open Pour Swimbait and have done some testing of prototypes. May need a few volunteers to test in the future.  8)

We would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

I would like this and would buy one.  :P

I think that would be a great idea.. I'm still thinking about buying my first open pour mold and it will probably be  the 6" flippin stick when I do.

I just recently bought 3 open pours 2 swimmers and a dropshot.  Would happily buy another if I liked it.

I use the open pour 6" Flippin Stick as my mold to use the very bottom of the cup plastic. Texas rigged with a lightweight as been really effective.

I like to pour them with any shade of light green and then dip the tail in chartreuse dye just before I use them.

Unfortunately, Northern Pike really like them also! So I use a cheap worm hook and pour my own lead bullet weights. It's not at all unusual to lose a dozen or more in an evening of fishing!

There are good cut back to 3" and used on a jig head too!

I would like to see a four inch swimmer, but would buy larger.

I would love a Roboworm 3" Ned worm open pour mold! I'm sure it's proprietary but who knows.

How about making open pour modification for Do-it's original 6" swimbait that was acquired from CC?

I like it. I have a couple of open pour swimbait molds already. Great for doing laminates.

Brennan would be just a pour mold or a line thru mold?  Hook slot or not would be a nice option. Any size 3.5” and up to about 6” would be fun.

I have contemplated both. I think overall to please the majority and cover the most application, a hook slot would be needed in longer swimbaits especially. The slot will offer more practicality for line-through rigging and ease of use for those who run the bait with a keel-weighted or weightless swimbait hook and lengthen the longevity of your bait. You tend to see less people rigging larger swimbaits, 6" and up, with a standard swimbait head unless they have an extra long shank hook in it or a stinger hook. If more people would rig them this way, a solid bait without a hook slot would probably be warranted. Although the bait may appear disproportional with this style of rigging, bass will typically target these head first, so the hook forward position isn't nearly a concern, but there will be a lot of application with these for other species, fresh and saltwater.

The total weight of the swimbait is something that really needs to be considered. You can get away with a 1-3oz swimbait on most heavy flipping sticks and sacrifice some casting distance and power, but get the job done. When you jump up to the heavyweights and start throwing the 3 to 8oz range, then we're talking a specialized rod which isn't practical for some but preferred by others.

All of this considered, what open pour sizes and styles interest you guys the most? Below is a 6" prototype without a hook slot. I think keeping these open pour is important. Who doesn't love a hand poured big swimbait? It also opens up much more potential to be creative and better imitate any bait fish you can think of!

Thoughts?

The way I would rig would be to use a musky spinnerbait wire up through the belly with a treble on the belly (one hook inserted into the belly). The wire would come out the nose of the bait.Put a large crane swivel on the wire with a treble hook in the chin of the bait.

I’d like to see that with a hook slot. That’s similar to one that I pour already. Love to see them up to 8 inches.

Although the prototype looks great and I would toss it as is, you could create larger sizes with less weight by slimming the profile... something like the smokin shad (or the original CC swimbait).

And definitely a hook slot... besides allowing for weedless rigging, this will lessen the weight of the bait and make the body more flexible for slower swimming action... definitely a hook slot!
