Title: Company at the deer stand
Post by: ctom on 11/09/20 07:59 UTC
This little fella, a button buck, came into the area to drink at the pond then lay down and had a rest on Saturday afternoon about 2. Yesterday he was back at 630 in the morning for a drink then just wandered back to wherever. I waved at him and talked to him both times he showed up and he seemed to not have any fear of me. Maybe 35-40 pounds and what looks to be orphaned.

I collected a nice 6 point in the rain tonight. I almost left the hill when the storm front hit....high winds from the NW when straight up out of the south had been blowing all day. Dropped about 20 degrees and the sky was solid black. I started down off the hill and half way the sky lightened up and the rain went to light drizzle soooooo back up the hill. As I turned the corner on a thicket to access the stand ladder I noticed the buck at the water hole twenty five feet away. Heart shot. He went about 25 yards and tipped over. Sure happy the rain let up. This season started with temps near 70 and unreal winds of 25-35mph sustained during the daytime hours. The deer went down and just stopped moving until this huge shift today. On the weekend we saw exactly one deer on the road going to and coming home from the hill....about 18 miles one way. On the road home tonight I saw 13. This weather shift is certainly welcome.

Rained all day on Tuesday so I stayed in. We had a bit of snow but it'll be gone by noon and I'll head out again then.

It warmed up nice this morning so I headed back to the hill around 9:30 and was off the hill headed home at 11:03 with a nice doe. Used my in-line 50 cal pistol on her. I got to the stand and found two fawns at the water hole. Then a buck came cruising along the edge of the cornfield 40 yards away. This doe came up out of the steep woods as I was getting ready to knock ice off the ladder steps and as I was getting ready to dress he out another buck came up the hill right on her trail so I'll assume she was hot. That buck did not want to leave and for a minute I thought I was going to have issues with him but I was finally able to chase him away. It took me less time to see five deer, shoot and gut one and get it off the hill than it took me to get up the damned hill. Then I had to yack with the landowner a while. When I came in the house Carole came screaming along and wanted to know if I was hurt or something because, according to her, I just left. She couldn't hardly believe I'd been there, shot one and picked u[p the other license in that short of a time frame. lol I'll be back at it tomorrow....with the pistol again.

Ya, Mike.  He scared my deer away and got arrowed.  It's hard to see but I've got a stand on that tree line in the photo.  He didn't make it far.
