We have some resident pileated woodpeckers around and this one has a distinctive scar in the white band right behind the eye and under the red head in this picture. Its been around now for a couple years. The feeder log is only about 7 feet outside the window where I got the picture. Beautiful bird. This picture was taken yesterday.

This morning only a short while ago this younger, smaller bird was pictured while enjoying some deer suet and swinging away.

We get a variety of birds and sometimes in the spring or fall we'll see some that are normally not around much but these big woodpeckers are truly winter birds for us as are all of the woodpeckers and we stay entertained having them here.

That's a great picture. It's rare to get that close to them. It's a pretty shy bird.

My wife feeds birds & we are covered up with all kinds of woodpeckers including the big ones. Ours beat the crap out of the feeder when it runs out. lol They're a cool bird.
