Title: Jig Clear coat
Post by: SpoonieLuv on 12/07/21 10:10 UTC
What's the preference for clear coats on jigs? I've used Sally Hansen's, it's good but looking for something with less smell.

Welcome to the Do-It forums Spoonie!

Personally, I use the CS Coatings Seal Coat on anything on a jig that needs sealing. Powder paint requires no sealer, unless eyes have been added after the paint has cooled. Diamond Coat (sp) is a popular top coat but it too has an odor. As you've alluded to the nail polish thing will work in a pinch. Lure Works makes a number of solvent based sealers but one has to take care with anything solvent based as the sealer may attack the eyes themselves if that is what you are sealing. CS Seal Coat has no solvents or odor and does an amazing job.

I air brush several of the more detailed jigs and use the CS product after the paint has been heat set and have zero issues with it.

Thanks ctom
I've been working with some UV resins and wondered about coating those, or if they really need to be. Like the powder painted heat cured ones.

No. Your resins do not need sealing.

I bought mine directly through the company... I think there may be a sale going on right now...

Thanks. I have the site saved. Maybe next month....this X-Mas stuff is hard on a fixed income.

How thick is this product?

I tried Rustoleum clear paint that was thicker, But didn't cover as well as crab coat.. Plastisol baits ate the Rustoleum finish  and got gummy.... It didn't effect the crab coat... I prefer KBS Diamond Clear, But it takes 3 weeks to fully cure.

I think I had some Kalins Crappie Scrubs turn one of the UV heads gummy also. I left it attached and in the package. It may have been sealed with Sally Hansen's, I can't remember. Lol

Any idea of the shelf life on the crab coat? I really like the CSI Seal Coat but the shelf life can bite you in the butt.

In an e-mail, Crab coat said they have had some over 10 years old that was still good.
