A buddy and I hit our local lake and found some open water between two sheets of ice that let us get some fishing done. We stayed entertained between the muskrats, ducks, eagles and an otter while we watched the floats. The fishing itself was slow but the other Tom managed to lasso this nice smallie as his first fish of the 2022 season. We had a couple other suspect hits too. The water temp where the open water was sat at an even 40 degrees. Sunshine, robins chirping and open water.....what a great way to spend a couple hours on March 18th. You can see one of the sheets of ice behind Tom in the picture. The other sheet was maybe two hundred feet to the right of him. This lake is where we generally start our open water season and generally has the ice nearby.

Nice to get out isn't it Tom. Our weather has been typically crazy. The last time I went out I caught 19. Then it got cold and snowy. Yesterday it warmed back up to 75 so I went out again. One gorgeous 13 inch crappie and a reckless 6 inch bass was all I could muster. Seems as though both fish and fishermen are confused. Great to get out though.

Nice to get out and nice fish there. I have been out caught a few small crappies but this lake is a muddy mess right now. so kind of tricky getting them on plastics. I think I'm going to pick up a couple dozen minnows on my next trip out until this muddy water clears up.
