Title: Topcoat cracking?
Post by: Fishermanbt on 05/29/22 06:07 UTC
Would someone please tell me why my topcoat is cracking?  I airbrushed several crank baits using airbrush paints.  Dry time varied between 8-24 hours. I then brushed on two thin coats of CS Coating. Again dry time varied. I noticed this morning that all of them have cracking, more so on the backs. Some cracking was noted on the gills.

How long have you had the CS? I found that I have to discard any that I have not used after about 1 year.

I think you're rushing your paint coats by applying the paint too heavy. Some colors can be real touchy about cracking and when I encounter this issue I thin down the pain a bit and use several thin coats that are heat set between each coat. Another thing to think about is to give the blanks a good wiping with a paper towel/alcohol after you've wrapped the bills and allowing them to dry well before painting. Then be careful to handle them by the bill if the blanks have one.
