I'm going to get a mold to make my own crappie nibbles out of soft plastic because the dough baits get taken off by crappie way to easy with no hookup a lot of times. Another plus is that you can make them any color you want too. Can't decide between a 1/4" salmon egg mold or a tiny wax worm mold that a local fellow uses that works good & stay on the hook too. What would be some good scent that can be added to cold plastic & cooked in? I'd also add some to the jar for them to marinate in so what would you guys recommend? Thanks

I go back and forth on scent. At the moment, I am just using gulp. I have only added it to finished baits so can't say on the before side. I have a little open pour egg mold that works well. Chris I can’t decide on a salmon egg mold or a tiny wax worm mold. The wax worms look pretty good torn into & putting half on the hook. A single 3/16 or 1/4” salmon egg in bright chartreuse or hot pink would be good to though.

I buy the Gulp juice in spray bottles and will put finished crappie and walleye baits in ziplock bait bags and give the a good dose. I have 1.5” Thump-It’s in jars of the juice…. Been there for months. Does it work? Nobody can convince me it doesn’t.

I have seen posts over the years back and forth about cooking scents into plastics. The main argument being the scent “cooks off” as you raise the temperature of the plastic. Since the plastic is not boiling I’m not sure I buy into that idea. I have tried it with some Toad Explode a few times with ok results. I just use Pro Cure crappie and panfish super gel. Small bottle, easy to apply, stays on the bait, and doesn’t keep on giving like a stinky pack of baits.

Another good scent is plain old cod-liver oil. It’s 100% organic so it’s it’s emulsifiable, meaning it can mix with water. Or more to the point, fish can actually smell/taste it.

Tom have you tried it & if so what were the results?

I've carried it in my tackle bucket for years and use it often when fish seem reluctant to hit. I go thru a 4 ounce bottle about every two years.

I don't know why but all fish like garlic. The best I've found is Bang in the Garlic scent. When you spray your lure the guy in the boat three boats over will smell it. And it's the only scent I have found that after half hour of fishing your bait still smells like garlic. Most scents are gone shortly after hitting the water. I will say by soaking a bait in a scent in a bag days before fishing will make it not smell like plastic and that has to help some.

I got my salmon egg mold & got some gulp alive shrimp scent to spray them down with & they work pretty good for crappie. You can definitely smell the gulp alive spray for a long time on them.

The best scent I’ve personally found for crappie is Bait Fuel. It’s water based so no adding to uncured plastic. Fish Sardis, Grenada and Enid lakes and on days when the fish are in a stubborn mood it makes a difference.

I've been meaning to try bait fuel so i thi'll get some to try.
