Title: Its early......
Post by: ctom on 02/24/24 11:36 UTC
.... but with the shoreline water open where I begin my spring fishing, I'm going on Monday. Supposed to be near 60 and I have an itch to scratch.

Honestly, I think this will be maybe the second earliest I have fished this lake. I remember one other year that I hit the old dock in late February and if the thinking cap still works, I believe it was February 19th that was the earliest. Between messing with making tackle and appeasing Ma's late winter wishes, I have been quietly stripping old line and spooling again with new on all of my crappie rods that carry mono. All new going on. Then in maybe July I'll empty a spool on one reel, tie on the tag end from another reel and refill the empty, now having basically new line on the other reel. I'll do this until I need to refill with new line on the last reel. I flip my braid each year and have already gotten that little chore done. I'm so ready to fish.

41 here at the moment, but is warming more now most days. The high today should be around 70. We don't get a lot of real cold weather here anyway, and 50's during the day are typical.

There's no ice fishing here that's for sure!  ::)

I had checked the lake temps and they're in the 52 to 56 range now, but the waters been muddy.

The MLF Pro Tour had a big tournament here this past week, and those guys caught some nice bass, so the bass are getting active. The spawn here usually is in the staging period around the end of Feb. here anyway, so not unusual for some big girls to be caught.  ;D

When I had checked, some of the fish caught in that tournament were shallow, and some were being caught offshore in deeper water.

No fish this morning but it was grand to be out on shore and casting. The wind became an issue and with the lake being drawn down to winter pool yet we honestly didn't expect much. Still, being out and spending time with a good friend is time well spent. Maybe next time the fish will be willing.
