Title: Fishing with a Soldier
Post by: bassmasters40701 on 05/04/12 08:34 UTC
Saturday I was fortunate enough to attend an event held on Watts Bar lake in Tennessee. Volunteer boaters were paired with both veterans and active military for free tournament for the soldiers. The event was a huge success! There were probably 45-50 volunteer boats and close to 60 soldiers there to have a good time and spend the day on the water.

The soldier I was paired with just came back from Afganistan one month prior with a broken ankle. He hadn't fished much but had always wanted to be fishing from a bass boat in a tournament atmosphere. He caught several fish and each one he drug in, you would have thought he was in the Bassmasters Classic. It was an awesome day!

Everyone there was very appreciative and you could tell it meant a lot to both the volunteer boaters as well as the soldiers.

If you hear of an event like this in your area please try to attend. As we know the Men and Women in uniform and their families sacrifce and have sacrificed a lot for this country, as fishermen, this is the least we can do to show our appreciation to them.

I spent a year teaching a fishing tackle class at my local Veterans Retirement home . These men are 60 to 90 years old . It was a hoot . Most of them didn't think they could do it at first . But they and did well . I even had them a banner made called STARS AND STRIPES Tackle . One of the most rewarding things I ever did.
