rigged it like this just for giggles & then the wheels started turnin. this is a 1 1/4 Tungsten weight with a random hook i had close by. personally id bump the hook up to a gammy 5/0 ewg. but i can see this working since it would probably go through without a problem

I like the way you think!!!!! Punchin' mats is the BOMB!!!!
I used the 3.5" and the issue I had was with the thick vegitation here, the tail ripped right off after the second flip. Guess the "fingers" catch in the mat to much. I had same issue with 4" swim toad. Feet tear up to quick.
Shot some in hard though se we will see.
What we need is a slight modification :D where the feet attach to the body and at the bend where the fingers start. If they were built up a bit, I think they would work. Either that or the feet could be made thinner and they would not catch and hold as good.
Lets go mat punchin' in this 100+ heat!!! The big girls always get deep in it this time of year!!!!!

I was thinking of making some with thinner feet so they could be used for this, as well as a very slow sub surface swim retrieve. If there is interest I will make them...
Another bait to look at would be the Toad Sticker. It collapses to nothing and will pretty much squeeze through anything. I like the Lil' Toad Sticker for this, but the big one works also.

Reason the swim toad is appealing is due to its thicker profile. The Dean Rojas fighting frog is killer for mat punching when the fish want that thick prifile. The big ones just crush them!!!!

How's the action on the 4" swim toad when shot in hard plastic? I can see them getting destroyed when shot in regular, by weeds and by fish. I guess it's not as big a deal now that I can just make more instead of buying more, but if they last longer all the better.

For punchin' mats, I think hard will be just fine. Here, we use anywhere from 3/4 to 1 3/8oz tungsten weights. With that much weight, the bait will have action.
I am more worried that with the firmer plastic, the bait will just hang in the vegitation and never get through.
It may end up that it can be used for some mats but the thickest of mats will need a compact still such as the flipster or flippin hog.
