Post by: Justin9j on 10/09/12 17:10 UTC
Ok so I bought a airbrush today.   Because I have a problem. I like to make everything I fish with now.   So does anyone on here paint their own cranks and what paint is best.   And epoxy or auto clear. For the clear

I use DeVcon 2 ton epoxy to clear mine over.  Looks awesome and its cheap.  What pait are you using to airbrush with?  Are you painting wood or plastic?

I have just started this deal.  Not even put paint in the gun yet.  I just wanted to know what everyone used and thoughts on stuff.

I use createx paint like most of the guys. This is a watercolor paint so if you don't like the paint job just wipe it off the lure with a wet rag. For the clear coat I use Dick Nite.

What type of airbrush do you have?  Createx is awesome stuff.  Order it online you will find it cheaper.  I got every color they make for like 230 bucks.  And yes you can aways just wipe it off.

I use a Badger 360. There are a lot of good airbrushes out there. Get one you can afford and go from there. Most of us use stencils for the small artwork. Freehand is only for the good painters!

I have a vapor gun.   My parts man had it cheap.  He ordered it for someone and they never picked it up so.  He sold it to me for what he had in it.

If it goes well iam going to get a better one.

I use Iwata they ae great.  I watched a few youtube vids to see what others were using and then went online a got one for cheap.  It has a the feed cup on top so i can change colors real fast and I only have to use a few drops at a time.  Saves a lot of paint that way.

Sorry if this has already been asked...and answered...but has anyone tried these paints on CCM plastic baits for backs, belly etc...and then dipped them?

I would really like to be able to spray a light coat of purple on the back of silver to match our Emerald Shiners.

I think you would have to use the special plastic paint. The trouble with the plastic paint is it dries so fast no onw wants to try it in their airbrush (least not me) I have used it with Q tips. Works, but doesn't look profesional.

Have any of you tried the soft plastic paint mixed 50/50 with retarder to slow the drying process so you have more "working time"?

I tried the to do it.  The problem was, when the paint was dry it just slid off real easy.  I picked up a swim bait that I had done and was going to dip it in clear plastic to seal the colors in.  But the paint just came right off on my fingers and on the cardboard I had them sitting on.  Water base colors dont work to well on soft plastic I dont think.

I know is can be done...get a yum money minnow.  I took it apart and sure enough it had a gray painted back.  It is just a matter of trial guys.

The minnow had been dipped quite a few times though

I'm guessing they use a solvent base paint where I'm using water base.

As I understand it the only paint that works ( that you and I can purchase ) is by I Spike It.  Lure Craft sells a line of soft plastic paints but I have read that it is produced by I Spike It.  It has a lot of high volatile solvents that flash very quickly.  Some people have stated that it can be a problem to clean from your airbrush.

I have some from Lurecraft and it's some nasty stuff. Smell horrible.  The way it acts I'm not putting it in my airbrush.
Ghost uses some paint from a craft store he sponges on his swims I think I remember him talking about. I'll have to search it.

It depends.  I have found a lot on Amazon.  I shop around.  It seems everyone has the same stuff, no matter what.

I would like to do a balsa crank. But it seems like that maybe over my head.

I noticed everyone has the same stuff too.

Balsa and basswood and cedar.  They are all pretty easy. You just have to put a sealer on the wood first and the sand it and the seal it again and then primer it.  Then you have to ask yourself, are you gonna do a through wire or just do anchors and all that.  It can get very time consuming real fast.  But they look nice and the action is great.  Remember the harder the wood the tighter the pattern of movement.
