Title: Different Colorants
Post by: BareKnuckleJigs on 11/26/12 23:08 UTC
From reading on the Forum, I've seen quite a few Veteran Pourers mention that some colorants were more sensitive, and more prone than other colorants to yellowing/discoloring.  Colorants use different elements/minerals to make the particular colors...such as Purple flake.  Purple tends to bleed worse than others, because of it's composition.

What are the sensitive colorants?  Is White one of them?

Purple, Clear chartreuse either yellow or green, almost all clear fouro's.
These are my main watch close list.  And; the lighter or more transparent; the touchier the color usually is.

White is one for me that has always been more susceptible to yellowing.  I'm not sure of why this is, but it is an issue.  I cringe when I get orders requesting white baits.  Plus, I have to make sure I play the music soft and very slow while I am pouring them so as not to further yellow the plastic.

I pucker up pretty bad when I am working with white.

No the music....I like country rock. Loud. Nothing like breaking into a shadow dance doing a southern two-step with nothing more in my arms than a big pile of new plastics. Then right back to work. Ma says she thinks I've lost it but I haven't the heart to tell I just found it....whatever it is. Loud music = dancing...dancing = healthy exercise.

Thank Yawl, Fella's.

Mr. Tom...I do more of that than I'm open to admitting...:D

Tried 2 MORE batches of "Green Ghost".  1st batch was 12 ozs, 3 drops White (was aiming for 2 drops but a third drop fell), 30 drops Pearl Green...got 1 decent shot then it started yellowing.  2nd batch was 12 ozs, 1 drop White, 30 drops Pearl Green...same thing.  Not Happy.

Internet here was trippin' this morning while the Coffee IV flowed, so I went to the shop after a bit of thinking..."if it is the White, maybe substitute the White with some Pearlescent, and maybe I'll add a touch of Lumina Black, and see what happens".  Cleaned out the pot, added 12 ozs plastic, 30 drops Pearl Green, 12 drops Pearlescent, 1 Smidgen Lumina Black powder.  Got upto temp, looked good...shot the 4" Skinny and Glider.  Stirring often whenever I have a free hand.  Demolded, shot the 5" Skinny.  Demolded, shot the 4" Skinny and Glider again (I need 2 more clamps!).  Baits look fantastic.  It definitely seems like White is touchy...maybe when using White, cook the plastic first then cool it down a hair, then add the White.  I didn't use White on this mornings batch, but I'll add White after cooking next time I use it.

I'm not sure what I'm going to write this color down as, but it's Killer for a Ghost Minnow in the Salt or other Baitfish, elsewhere.
Thinkin' maybe "Metal Green" or "Metal Minnow Green"..."Militia Minner"...I'm thinking "Metal Green".

I'll post it as soon as I can get a decent pic...

I only seem to get one shot out of white...even the 2nd reheat seems to always go south on me...

The only time I get white...to stay white. is to heat in very small intervals (like 20 seconds) and don't let it get above 355 with reheats staying as low as it will flow (320ish depending on the mold).

I like white...it just doesn't like me!

Florescent Yellow is fussy also!!
Strangely enough I haven't had many issues with Florescent green.

Roger on'nat, Mr. Andy.  I've been thinking about Fluoro. Chartreuse...I've read several times that it's a pain sometimes.

White doesn't like me either.  That's OK...I'll leave it in the box...until I need some more Shrimp imitators...
