Title: Trout & Panfish Flies
Post by: Jerry V on 01/05/13 10:21 UTC
May as well start a thread about these fly ties too...

Here's a little stonefly imitation I tied up over the holidays with the new vise.  It's a new pattern for me and I plan to play with other colors in the future to find the right mix... once I'm done I hope to have a "stand by" fly that I can count on.  I'll have to wait for slightly warmer weather to find out what my local Trouts like.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the Crappie and Bluegill take a liking to it this spring as well.

For crappie and panfish; use rubber for the tail and atenia (sp). the fly will last a lot longer.

Yep Musky, that's a pretty good idea... I generally use more rubber legs, tails and such on my Panfish ties.  The Trouts however seem to like the more natural look of the goose biot. That stuff is tougher than it looks I guess, but usually 2 or 3 fish will have a toll on them... Then I gotta tie up some more.

Really nice tie and color choice as well.
I guarantee that fly fished in February on lake Guntersville on sinking line will fill a live well with good bream and crappie.  Or fished on light spinning tackle with a small split shot about 6" up the line.  You could tie a black body with either chartreuse or orange-ish brown appendages version and see how your local fish like it as well.   Both are killers down here.

Thanks pjmcla... you better believe I would love to get that tie all kinds of wet on Guntersville.  But then again, if I were there, I prolly wouldn't bother to quit fishing a Bass Jig long enough to get a fly rod out of it's case... lol  Sure would like to try it though.

Funny you mentioned black... that's the next tie on that pattern for me.  I think black or browns will be good.  I went with the greens/yellows based on the recipe I was following all the while thinking 'black/brown'... most of the wiggly little critters in my local streams are much darker, but something different can't hurt either I suppose.

I'll post up a pic of the next version with some black/brown with "orange-ish" appendages for ya once I get 'er done.

Seeing as I live in trout land on the Utah/Idaho border, I thought I'd post a few flies I made.

Hey G...do you ever fish the Green River, below Flaming Gorge?  Several of us guys would make an annual trek there and fish for five or six days before heading home.  We'd usually stay at Denny Breer's place in Dutch John.  I've been on a few guided trips there, but we would usually float the river in our own pontoons, or we'd sometimes walk the "A" section.  I remember a couple places on the "B" section that gave the "pucker factor" a whole new meaning when floating it on a pontoon.  It was on that river that I first used a balloon as an indicator.  I haven't been back to the Green since Denny died, so it's been a while.

What a great river.  You're flies brought back some fond memories.  Thanks.

VERY Nice stuff G... You've motivated me to spend a little time at the tying bench and get ready for spring.  (it'll never be here too soon)  I love those little bugs in the bottom picture, stellar stuff.

Thanks guys.  Spring can't come soon enough for me.  If we could just get a day in the upper 30s, low 40s, I'd be all about jumping in a nearby creek, but it just hasn't happened the last two months.  Now we have another foot or two of snow coming in tonight through Sunday.  This winter is driving me nuts, but at least I'm getting plenty of time to stock up for spring.

I'm glad you like those little bugs.  I made that pattern up about a year and a half ago and it has become my go to nymph.  I kind of just combined elements of some of my favorite flies, the Prince and Hares Ear.  A size 16 has been very kind to me.

I haven't been to The Green, which I know is crazy as I've lived in Utah since 1994.  Things have just been pretty busy since then, and I usually just have time to make quick trips to places within an hour or so of my house.  Which I can't complain, we have just about everything from brook trout to tiger musky in a 50 mile radius.  There aren't any huge streams like The Green nearby, but many good streams.  I spend a lot of time fishing tiny creeks with my 3wt.  A 15" brown feels like a monster on that thing.  I love it.  There are a couple of midsize rivers around, which is where all those bows came from.  One of them runs right through a lava flow and is full of all sorts of potholes with trout in them with big, black cliffs rising around you.  It's quite beautiful.

Some day I would really like to make it to The Green though.  I have an uncle that has been telling me about fishing the cicada hatch there around Father's Day since I moved here.  Too  bad he's never invited me along!  >:(  I also haven't made it to Lake Powell, which looks incredible.  Red rock canyons full of stripers, largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, gills, walleye and catfish, what could be better?  Oh well, someday I need to make it to both.
