Title: Line choices.
Post by: Justin9j on 01/08/13 20:07 UTC
What fluorocarbon line is everyone using.  I have been using sufix and vicious with pretty good out comes.    Thinking of going to some higher end stuff.

I haven't tried suffix. I've used Trilene,Vicious,Stren,P-line,Vanish and XPS Flourocarbons. P-line and XPS stand head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion. Both are clear, strong, abrasion resistant, and handle great for flourocarbon. I buy wich ever one of the two I can get the best deal on when I need it. I'm perfectly happy with both.

I use Seaguar. Like the rest it is way over priced but It seems for me to work the best. I buy it in the 1000 yard reals and use it till it's gone. I'm not like some and buy new line every year. I like the bigger spools. Seems to spool better. I feel a reel and then run it behind the boat to straighten it for a while. I see guys changing there line all the time on the tournament trails. I fill half the spool with cheap line and the rest with Seaguar. I've never had a bass run off that much line to cause a problem. But maybe someday.

For panfish I use nothing in fluoro but Vanish #4. I use 8 pound Vanish for my casting in Lake Superior. Nothing but Vanish up there.

I think I've tried about every fluorocarbon line made and by far the best is the Seaguar. It has less line memory and casts smoother. Vicious is probably the toughest but it also has the greatest line diameter and has the most memory. One little tip when using fluorocarbon, spray it down after each trip with a good line conditioner, helps keep memory down

Seaguar - Tatsu.  :)

Tatsu is by far the best on the market that I've tried. For cost reasons I normally use Invisix or if just a leader I like p line.

Best that I can afford to use on a routine basis -  Seaguar Invizx. I use it in open water.  Best I have used -  either Seaguar Tatsu or Toray Solaroam.  Have not used these two much; just started testing.  But both are good so far ( and pricey ).  Testing them as top shot lines.

I use braid line for everything.   Haven't used mono or flo in years.

I like braid a lot when it works.  Whenever I get a backlash with braid I remember why I hate it so much.

Some of my reels get Ande Clear Mono, some get Seaguar Red Label, but a select few get Power Pro.  Catfishing and Offshore is well executed with braid.  My few reels that get Fluorocarbon are usually not fished with a leader, I'm tying directly to the main line so fluoro's improved Light Refraction is a consideration here.  Mono is the cheaper stuff with the usual trade-offs, and I use it where I'll be most often using leaders...Ande is extremely tough.

I'm sittin' here this morning on my cel on this forum, 24 oz. Tervis half-full of coffee and watching guys sight-cast Redfish on TV.  Blessed and not stressed, but too at work to use a Carrot as a Jerk.

That link was useless - I have never had that problem - ever.  Do you have a link that addresses Professional Overruns?  I occasionally / regularly have a problem with those.

What braid / color do you use?

Sunline has some real good products, especially the new finesse florocarbon.

Nice vid Andrew. I'm going to remember that trick. And Jason....all of my snarls like that are non-professional over-runs. Bait casters and I have a limited relationship....that primarily being one of vertical jigging. You know, push the button and when the jig hits the bottom the spool gets engaged. Love'em for that. Hate'm for casting.

If I had a nickel for every backlash I got I could fish Tatsu for life.  My favorite ones are when you just make a normal cast and for no apparent reason they just ball up.  I'm sure there's a reason - I just don't get it - if they've been fishing fine for hours, why they would just explode like that?

Professional overrun.  Ha ha   I'm good at those as well.

I have them on spinning tackle where the loop is 35 yards down on the spool and I haven't had that much line out in 2 months.

That's just part of the replacement assurance policy that those expensive lines come with.  :D

^^^I have NO idea how this happens, but I get'm too. My two most common NASTY backlash causes are...my wacky worm tearing off on the cast, and the occasional bait catching on an unsean overhead limb. Both of these will give you as nasty a birdsnest as could possibly be had.

If you close the bail by hand on the spinning reel by hand it helps keeping the loops out.I have a buddy that tightens his drag a little & pulls the line til the loop pops free to straighten it out.

backlask if it every happens I use black tape I take out about 50yd of line out then put on some tape then reel in a safety crutch

These are the worst for sure.  You can pretty much put that rod down for the day in either scenario.

I like seaguar invizx, and more recently Sunline FC Sniper I use this line in 5lb & 7lb for bass fishing. I fish a lot of clear lakes in Cali and I get bit more with light line.

A lot of the lines you guys in the hot air states are mentioning probably would be a tangled mess up here where the air can get cool. The formulation of salt water line used in your tropical climate generally allows the lines to be limp....there. Take 25 degrees out of the equation and tell-tale wind loops and loose coiling issues begin to appear. Someone mentioned p-line and that sees some use up here by some.

Having that high priced line staying below the Mason-Dixon line is pronbably a good thing. I'd be sucker enough to buy it and just have to throw it away in six inch shreds. That's how it would come off the reel after our wonderful temps got through re-signing what was done in a warm house.

Never had a problem with backlash with braid.  I did once.  It wasn't to hard to remove the nest and continue fishing.   I only use Power Pro.

It's rare I use braid but when I do it's always Power Pro. I use it when I go to Canada. Big northerns don't care. Or when I fish a frog or top water with long casts. Or even a rattle trap in grass and need to rip through it. Other then that here in Ohio it just isn't the right line for use. But I do fish primarily bass.

I like braid for quite a few bassin techniques. It's great for wading the river for smallies and saugeye, as it allows for very long casts. It's lack of stretch gives great sensitivity and hook setting power at long distances. It's small daimeter also gets less bow in it when retrieving cross current.
It's the only way to go when punching mats and froggin. I prefer it for fishing weightless stick worms Texas style, and for soft jerkbaits, especially in grass. Its small diameter and flexibility gives those baits much better action than flouro or mono and cuts through grass better. I also like it for chatterbaits and spinnerbaits. With spinnerbaits I use a flourocarbon leader to prevent the braid from getting caught in the splitrings.
I've tried several brands of braid. Power Pro is my current favorite. I'm gonna give Tuf-line XP a whirl this year. It gets good reviews. I really liked their now discontinued tuf-line duracast except that, contrary to it's name it wasn't very durable, but it handled better than any other line I've ever used, of any type. It was a braid with a mono coating. The problem with it was, the mono would become brittle and seperate from the braid strands. Hopefully they'll get the problem figured out and bring it back.-----Tim.
