Post by: matt on 01/13/13 08:08 UTC
then does a plastic bait becomes a lure, when you add eye or paint so when does it becomes lure when add more to bait a crank bait you paint and add hook
like at all the sedile line of plasticshttp://www.sebileusa.com/home.php (http://www.sebileusa.com/home.php)
Price from plastic bait to plastic lure you have more time and effort so where do you separate the diffuses from the two

IMO if you use anything live, or organic it is a bait.  Anything that is made of plastic whether hard or soft, it is a lure.

Bait definition- Food or other lure placed on a hook or in a trap and used in the taking of fish, birds, or other animals.

Lure definition-A decoy used in catching animals, especially an artificial bait used in catching fish.

I've made some plastic baits that look like and act like live bait flash and move like live bait

IMHO, it becomes a lure when you put it in the water! ;D

My guess.  When "anything" becomes a lure is when it is used for that purpose.  It is not only the object; but the intent of the action.  A bait is used as a lure when you put it in the water and attempt to entice the fish to bite it.  Feathers and carved bone were believed to be earliest artificial lures.    Sort of like lipstick and make-up   ;).

And I say a bait is something you put the hook in, while the lure already comes with hooks.

I hear down in Texas,  they use a piece of frayed nylon rope as a lure to catch big gar. No hooks at all. The fish's teeth get tangled in the rope and they're caught. So us this not a "lure" just because it hss no hooks? Interesting topic here.

I tend to think the two are synonyms:

http://thesaurus.com/browse/lure

but I also like this take on it:

And I say a bait is something you put the hook in, while the lure already comes with hooks.

It IS an interesting conversation.

I grew up fishing the smallmouth rivers in WV, and we honestly just couldn't afford artificial lures. But here's what we'd do.We'd take a beef liver. Slice it into thin, narrow strips that tapered at one end. the end result was a leech looking thing about 4 inches long that absolutely looked like the real thing in the water. We'd fish it just like a lure. and it absolutely killed the smallmouth and catfish. So was it a lure or was it bait? I tend to think of it as bait that acted like a lure if that makes any sense. Whichever it was, it worked. And still does BTW ;D. Man I miss the old days sometimes :'(

You can take a chamois skin cloth and cut out a twist tail that works good too.  We used to do that a LONG time ago instead of buying Uncle Josh pork trailers.  Dyed them with Rit dye sometimes.

Innovative! I like it!

I'd do pretty much the same thing when tying dear hair mice.  A three or four inch piece of narrow leather tied on the hook shank and trimmed to a point made a good looking tail.
