Title: glueing on eyes
Post by: andrewlamberson on 01/27/13 12:54 UTC
Is anyone having an success with gluing eyes on CCM plastic and baits?? I suspect you need something that you can brush over the entire eye and immediately surrounding plastic.

We had a series of posts on this subject awhile back...but nothing conclusive.

Dipping the eyes/heads of the bait in clear plastic looks really nice...but is really tedious.

I have tried several glues and so far have not found one that will work.
I have not tried the I-Spike-It glue yet.  If someone finds one that works; I would appreciate knowing the brand that does.

I have tested out super glue on the 3D eyes before. They stick on and stay on pretty good. My problem was when I put the lures in a bag with worm oil. The eyes would separate meaning the "sticker" part of the eye with the pupil and the holographic background would stay on the lure. The plastic 3D part came off. That is when I started dipping and never looked back. I hope that makes sense.

I have always had to dip them...I just wish there was an easier way!

Amen.  I have "painted" some on; and that works OK; but the eyes don't "look" as good as the reflective 3D eyes ( to a human anyway ).   Have not tested one vs other on the water; so the fishes verdict is unknown.  My guess is most of the time they don't care.  But; it is a confidence thing; which can be very important.

I use Zap-A-Gap and make sure you drop on a tiny drop per eye, not long after you shoot the baits (within  a day or two) so you can stick them on while the plastic is at it's most dry point to get a good bond.  I then coat another drop over the eyes to "seal" them from the outside.  Keep in mind I use this method only on baits with recessed eye sockets, as it holds in the Zap-A-Gap.

I have seen this product on I spike it, it's a clear dip. Just as you would dip a tail a different color but this is clear so I thought it might work for sealing the eyes..I have not tried it but looks like it might work....

I for the most part use the method super is doing. Been working with an eye mold that I had made. Basically I shoot it with a lot of glitter. Then use mend it to glue them on. And lastly dot the pupil with the dotting paint from spike it. This way the whole bait is flexible and you can have any color eye you want including red which bleeds when I use them. Another thing I use to dot the pupil is a flow pen made by passhe. You can leave the color in it all day and works every time. This product does not use air it is gravity feed and makes NICE dots. Does nice kill spots too. Still time consuming but no dipping.

Good idea on pouring your own eyes, Frank.  Making the mold would be easy, the pouring tedious.  Like the idea of using glitter for the color, makes eye color limitless.  Agree on the mend it glue.  My opinion is its the best glue for plastic to plastic.

I just used some Mend-It glue which is sold as a plastic repair glue on some eyes for a Croaker and DD Gill.  It seems to bond really well.  Not sure how it will hold up in the water.  I know Mend-It works well for plastic to plastic repair in the water so I am thinking this is a good solution.  Much easier than dipping.

I like the idea of an eye mold!

Bonding the same material probably makes a lot more sense.

I wonder if just putting a drop of  hot, clear plastic over the eye would protect it...and not look goofy?. I'll find out later tonight!

It just so happens that the Mend It glue I ordered came today. I used it to glue eyes on several skinny carrots and a 3 inch croaker. Looks successful.  As for method, I applied a thin coat of the glue to the bait, placed the eye on it, and after it dried applied a thin coat of the glue over the eye and extending onto the surrounding lure. They dried and have withstood me trying to pry them off with my fingernail. Looks good. Of course only time will tell if they withstand actual fishing. By the way this method is much less trouble than dipping in my opinion, however dipping does have the advantage of reinforcing the head of the lure and perhaps making it more durable for applying a hook.

This is sooooo off topic, and I apologize (kind of) he he  ;D but fasteddy, did you get your screen name from the movie "Stripes"?  I won;t start quoting the movie, although embarrassingly enough I can.  :-[

by the way, I like the eye mold idea, but then what would my wife do?  :)

ok has anyone requested an eye mold be made yet?  I LOVE THAT IDEA.. maybe three sizes per mold like a Do-It lead mold.. Small eye for carrots and fry's, a medium eye for wuz-it, and a large for the smoken shad/dd gill/big swim toad..

Once again Frank is a genius!!  ;D

Really the handle, er.....no.. Lol. And I'm sure it's not in deference to my hook setting abilities either

That should have read " re the handle". Guess I'm not so swift after all.

Here are some eyes for ya'll. These are red cut-crystal. Dipping to seal them covered the facets, but they are there in all their wonder. In the sun these things hurt my eyes they flash so much. I did them a while back and just never got around to the camera until I started reading this thread.

In the hand the eyes bulge and remind my of the old carton character Barney Google and the little jingle that went with him.....Barney Google with the goo, goo, googly eyes.  Man, that dates me.
