Title: Mad Dad & Zoom issue?
Post by: wubbawurm63 on 01/29/13 21:42 UTC
Has anyone heard any more about the issue with Zoom about the mad dad? I have been stalling my customers on this bait. I know these things take time, so should I discontinue this bait from my line for now until the situation is resolved?

I personally would wait till when/if you are contacted by Zoom. Change the bait name so it cant be googled.

Wonder if someone could take a hardening compound and fill in the area where the ridges are? Then you're left with a flat claw
Or Do-it ccm could redesign the claw without ridges and exchange them out with those who have the questionable mold.. Fish don't care about ridges.

The name won't make a difference. All they have to do is a google image search with a picture of a mad dad and any website with a picture of one up will be listed.

I would think it would effect the claw action to some degree to remove the ridges.  How much?  I do not have a clue.

I'm sure that Do-It and CCM are taking this matter seriously.  They have probably talked to their lawyers and insurance companies and have probably communicated with Zoom as well.  For obvious reasons, we are not privy to those communications.  Lawyers work on different timetables than many other people...30 days here, 30 days there, etc.  Personally, I have enough faith in Jason and the Do-It guys to keep us in the loop and keep us informed when it's appropriate to do so.  They will determine when that "appropriate" time comes, not us.

When I was dealing with a similar action I just locked up the ordering part of that bait. It showed on the site but you couldn't order it. If contacted about purchasing it I simply told people the truth and stated that I would not sell any of the bait until things got settled. Its hard to hang onto something that has the potential to get you in hot water. My situation was different in some ways, similar as heck in others. The big difference was that I had a bait with an obvious difference and felt deep down I was right and they were wrong. This sounds entirely different so I guess if it were me I'd just park the mold and not use it.

Be interesting to see if their is a violation of Zoom's patent, will it affect other CC baits?  The twin tail Chub Grub (it has great action) looks to have ridges that are similar.

I would wait till the matter is settled but an easy mod might settle the patent infringment.

Grind or machine the edge of the ridge down to an angle. Here is a simplified side view pic I made if you can understand what I am trying to show.

Top before and bottom after.

Denny, my friend, you've hit the nail right on the head.

Thanks,
